The garden was formally opened and celebrated in May. It’s a delight to behold and the work of many willing hands. Long may it bloom. The Rás Tailteann 2018 (Irish’s national week-long cycle race) took place at the end of May. As a gesture of respect to Stamullen man Gabriel “Gaybo” Howard, who died tragically this spring and had such a long and honourable association with the race first as a rider and later as an organiser, his family were invited to drop the flag and start the race in Drogheda. They also presented the yellow jersey to the stage winner. Our local club was rep-resented by Cian Delaney and Arek Klus in the race, carrying on the tradition.Slav is a 13 year old first year student of Franciscan College, Gormanston, and a Julianstown resident, who needs cancer treatment in the USA. His school recently held a fundraising day for him and man-aged to gather more than €7,000. There’s been a coffee morning in the Lime Kiln too but donations are still welcome at his gofundme page - www.gofundme.com/help-for-slav-rhabdomyosarcoma/donate.Stamullen Badminton Club is on a roll. Established in 1984, its most recent suc-cesses include a near clean-sweep of the Meath county championships – under 11s (champ & runner up), under 13s girls (champ), under 13s boys (champs), un-der 15s girls (champ) and under 15s boys (runners up). Scott Guildea (age 13), who we’ve mentioned before here, is now on the under 15s national Irish team compet-ing internationally. We wish him good luck representing Ireland on the world stage. If you’d like to join the club there’s badminton for adults over the summer on Monday nights and on Mondays and Fridays for youth members. There’s also a summer camp planned. More details available from Paddy at 087-4144834.Speaking of summer camps in the area, if you’ve a little star (aged 4-12) at home you may be interested in the Star Camp in Gormanston Park from 23-27 July. The RTÉ star hosted the lunchtime debate on the motion “The Irish Education System has Failed its Young People”, which saw the Coláiste’s upcoming debaters, coached by senior debating champions, demonstrate their oratorical skills in front of a packed lunchtime audience in the school’s library. The second debate, was held at 7pm in An Grianán, and this special event saw many former students returning to CNI to partic-ipate. On the evening there were no fewer than seven national champions, two pro-vincial champions and two brave teach-ers speaking. The debate was judged by the current Irish Debating Coach, Aodhan Peelo and hosted by Fianna Fail Educa-tion Spokesperson, Thomas Byrne. Many thanks to all who attended and supported the event, which was a fitting celebration of the Debating Society’s outstanding suc-cess in Coláiste na hInse.Dáltaí Complete Junior GaisceA small cohort of our 2u bh-liain daltai who were taking part in the Junior Gaisce Pilot programme recently complet-ed the “Adventure Journey” section of the programme. Emily was the winner of the best gross score in the individual junior cat-egory which meant she had the overall lowest score on the day (16 gross points). An Cuan Enjoy PE on the BeachLast Wednesday 16th May saw the stu-dents from An Cuan venture down to Bettystown beach for their PE class to take advantage of the sunshine and warm weather. They took part in a mini sports day, competing in the 100m sprint, the sack race and the ‘spud and spoon’ race, which seemed the safer alternative to the traditional egg and spoon! Victors of the 100m sprint and sack race emerged quite easily, while the winner of the spud and spoon race was harder to gauge. After a couple of trial runs with the rules being looked on as ‘guidelines’, out third race allowed us to find winners of 1st, 2nd & 3rd place. The day was topped off by an ice cream, and a stroll through the dunes tak-ing in the views of the golf course, to relax after all the excitement. A lovely day was had by all. There are definitely more trainers in here to go with the sports wear I swore I’d never wear un-less I was doing something sporty. That’s also changed. Jeans or leggings? Tee shirt or a blouse? No contest really – comfort wins! But before now comfort had no place in my choice of footwear. It was all about appearance. Cripplingly high shoes and uncomfortable sandals with straps that cut. None of these things mattered a jot as long as they looked good. I don’t know the exact moment it all began to change. It could’ve been when I real-ised instead of just taking my shoes off at the end of a night out, I was taking them one off at a time at the beginning of the night for comfort. Or when I found my-self driving home from work in my socks. Don’t do that actually, even though I found it a very re-laxed and carefree way to drive, it contravenes your insurance policy. It’s also insurance companies (and health and safety) that make me wear covered in shoes in work, which led to my feet needing to be free at the end of a long hot day, which led me to take my shoes off and drive in my socks. All this despite the fact that in all my years of work-ing, I’ve never heard of any Hairdresser sustaining a se-rious toe injury as a result Oasis Childcare Centre Mornington Co. We are not part of a chain! of work but hey, the insurance companies job is to put the fear of God into everyone about the most unlikely disaster scenarios, so they rule our lives, or my choice of work footwear anyway. At home is different of course, and I’ve been through the comfy summer footwear range. A few pairs of Havianas – flipflops that are slightly more respectable only be-cause they have a label, but I’m a bit gul-lible when it comes to stuff like that. I had a brief love affair with Crocs for the same reason. I mean I could see how ugly they were but everyone was wearing them and they were comfy but eventually even I had to admit they were pretty awful. Also, a friend had banned me from her house if I was wearing them. So, enter the Slider! These were intro-duced to me by my soccer loving daugh-ter. A flat but bouncy supportive sole with a 3-inch band of equally soft material that keeps them on and – most importantly – a sports company logo on them. Cheap versions of these have been around the poolside’s of the continent for the long-est time but once the sports companies took them to a new level, got the sports stars to wear them after matches (with socks though! eugh!), the kids were won over, and once I tried them on, so was I. They even make you walk in a more relaxed way. The whole family has them. They are comfortable and ugly – comfugly! Not really suitable for a night out, but I might be tempted... . §Please mention The Meath Coaster when replying to advertisementsHOUSEHOLD SERVICESBG PAINTING & DECORATINGInterIor & exterIor25 YEARS EXPERIENCE REFERENCES AVAILABLEFREE CONSULTATIONS & ESTIMATESWALLPAPER ALSO AVAILABLEContact Brian 086 7308449Call Nicky - 041 9887128 087 7734344 A Local BusinessCosmic Cleanwww.cosmicclean.ieT&Cs & Minimum Charge appliesMAJOR DISCOUNTS for Multiple RoomsRug Collection & Delivery Service AvailableProfessional Carpet & Upholstery CleaningSPECIAL OFFER!Noel SavageElectrical Services20 Years Experience • Security LightingFuseboard Upgrades • Rewires, Extra Sockets • Lights, Fully Insured and RegisteredNo Job Too SmallBettystown, Co. St Marys Baton Twirlers42 members from the club recently competed in more that 300 events at the 2018 ABTI National Championships which took place on the weekend of 28th and 29th April in Gormanston College Sports Centre, County Meath. The athletes ranging in age from 4 years to 18 years put on spectacular performances in indi-vidual events as well as team events and took the gold in numerous events. But the highlight of the weekend came on Sun-day evening when the overall high points awards were announced.
