< Previous© June 2018 The Meath Coaster30Julianstown Youth OrchestraThe Julianstown Youth Orchestra held its end of year con-cert at the Barbican in Drogheda on Friday 18th May. The concert was a showcase for the Junior and Senior Orchestras who performed under the direction of the con-ductors Ailbhe Kirkan and Fergus Shiel. The performance started at 7.30pm to the enjoyment of the large au-dience of family and friends of the per-formers. The performance featured many blossoming musicians with an assortment of musical instruments. It was a perfect opportunity to experience the talents of the Julianstown Youth Orchestra. The concert opened with the Junior Or-chestra made up of 40 children of mostly primary school age performing on violins, violas, cellos, double bass, flutes, clari-nets, trombones, harp and percussion. The high point of the Junior Orchestra performance was their performance of Freddie Mercury’s Bohemian Rhapsody accompanied by the 60 member Senior Orchestra, of mostly secondary school students. The dynamics of this arrange-ment delighted the audience and the mu-sicians really enjoyed playing together as one orchestra. In addition to the host of in-struments listed above, the Senior Orches-tra included additional instruments such as oboes, saxophones, bassoons, French horns and trumpets. The performance then followed with the longer and more challeng-ing Senior Orchestra arrangement of Rossini’s The Italian Girl in Al-giers Overture. This was conducted by orchestra member Mebh Brere-ton-Hurley making her conducting début, with astonishing command and confidence. This is one of the unique aspects of the Julianstown Youth Orchestra’s work giving out-standing opportunities to orchestra members. The audience were then treated to a duet of Arthur Pryor’s Fantastic Polka per-formed by guest musician Steve Mathie-son from the RTÉ Orchestra on trombone accompanied by Fergus Shiel on piano. The Senior Orchestra continued with a modern musical arrangement called ‘Stronger’ composed by Senior Orches-tra member Jennifer Shiel aged 13 years which impressed all present. The atmosphere throughout was calm and relaxing and there was an ease about the performance which was met with enthusi-astic applause and praise. It was a wonder-ful evening where the musicians of both the Junior and Senior Julianstown Youth Orchestras demonstrated their talents and ability. It was a fantastic opportunity for the musicians to perform together and a great achievement for them. There was a brilliant sense of ensemble, commitment, dedication and fun displayed by the Or-chestra which has developed into one of Irelands leading youth orchestras. New members are always welcome. Sharon TolanThis month we received our new 3 Year Capital Programme 2018-2020. This programme is a culmination of the work of Councillors over the past few years, highlighting areas for investment and crucial improve-ments. Some of the key areas that came as very welcome news to me as I’ve been working hard with the Executive to deliver were:€500,000 of Road Levies allocated for the R132 Julianstown Traffic Management Scheme. This scheme is crucial to the East Meath area, where 25,000 vehicles drive through Julianstown on a daily ba-sis! I look forward to continuing to work with the Transportation team in progress-ing this Scheme.Laytown/Bettystown Community Fa-cility - €1,450,000 of Development lev-ies have been allocated for a Community Facility in the Laytown-Bettystown-Don-acarney-Mornington area. It is crucial we find a suitable site that will benefit most of the community, as we are all spread out across the 4 areas. If you have any suggestions, please do get in touch, but check with the owner first!Community Grant Scheme - €100,000 per year for 2018, 2019 & 2020 has been allocated for a new Community Grant Scheme. This will be very welcome news for local clubs and organisations that struggle weekly to provide and/or improve facilities they can offer. I know that applying for Sports Capital Funding and Leader Funding can be a difficult and cumbersome process, and very often if clubs are successful, they still strug-gle to come up with match funding. I’m looking forward to seeing this new Grant Scheme rolled out in the area. Watch this space for de-tails and deadlines!Beach Entrance Civic Build-ing - €2.1 million has been provided to deliver a fabulous addition to Bettystown with state of the art facilities for our community and beach users. I have always advocated for people with dis-abilities when this topic has been up for discussion. We need to ensure that we provide the best possible toilet and changing facilities for all users, and that we make accessing the beach as easy as possible and as pleas-ant an experience as possible for all!R150 Laytown to Bettystown Spine Road ProgressBy the time you are reading this, the clos-ing date for submissions to the Compulso-ry Purchase Order Scheme for the lands at Ninch and Betaghstown will have passed. We await news from An Bord Pleanala if the scheme is granted, or an Oral Hearing will be necessary. I will continue to work hard to progress the delivery of this criti-cal road, and I made my own submission in support of the Compulsory Purchase Order to ABP. Check out my facebook page Cllr Sharon Tolan East Meath for all the latest information and updates.Bus Shelter UpdateI have been working with our Transpor-tation Section of Meath County Council and the NTA for some time now, on secur-© June 2018 The Meath Coaster33ing a number of new bus shelters for the area. Following the completion of a tech-nical review of the shelter locations, I am delighted to have confirmation that two new bus shelters will be installed in the coming months at Inse Bay in Laytown, and two more also on the Eastham Road. There are a number of locations that have been deemed unsuitable from a techni-cal perspective, but the Transportation team have agreed they will assess if the completion of some minor works at these locations would make it possible for the installation of bus shelters. I will continue to progress these for all of our commuters and public transport users.May MotionsThankfully a motion submitted by Cllr Tom Kelly calling on the “Department of Education and the Bishop of Meath to do a land swap of the old senior prima-ry school” did not get a seconder at the May Municipal District meeting. The sen-ior primary school in Laytown, Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh are currently at a crucial stage in their live Planning Application for their new school build. This new school is long overdue, and will complete the state of the art educational facilities we have secured in Laytown-Bettystown. I have worked closely with the school board, the department, and the Council to ensure the best possible design both in terms of fa-cilities for our children, and very impor-tantly in terms of road safety and parking. I would appeal to those in the community objecting to this new school to consider the children. It would be a very sad day in Laytown to see two-story prefabs being redelivered to the school yard of Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh to cater for their grow-ing numbers. I hope people can get behind the new school build and support the plan-ning application!East Meath Votes Yes in the Referen-dum to Repeal the 8th!It was a difficult campaign, and one that I’m sure most of us are glad is over! I am very proud to have supported a Yes vote. A big thank you to everyone who engaged in a respectful manner, and got out and used their vote! In the East Meath part of the Louth Constituency (us on the Coast!), we have a total electorate of 14,744. With a 61.46% turnout, 9062 of us voted. We had a total of 73.39% (6651) who voted YES, and 26.62% (2411) who voted NO. Well done on making Ireland a more com-passionate and caring place for women.Don’t forget to get in touch if you have an issue I can assist you with. Sharon© June 2018 The Meath Coaster34Stress Management Exam TimeWith the State exams upon us this can be a stressful time for all involved (students, parents and teachers alike) and it can feel a little overwhelming. Howev-er, there are simple diet and lifestyle steps we can take which may help us manage stress more effectively: Stay hydrated S tudies have shown that even mild dehy-dration (loss of only 1.5% of body fluid) affects concentration levels and the abil-ity to think clearly. It is generally recom-mended to drink 6-8 glasses of water per day (depending on individual require-ments)Get a good night’s sleep: Research shows that students who slept for 7 or more hours per night during ex-ams scored almost 10% higher grades than their peers who slept for less than 7 hours. Poor sleep can interfere with con-centration levels and memory, putting you at a real disadvantage during exam prepa-ration and during the exams themselves.Reduce or remove stimulants (sugar, coffee, tea, nicotine, alcohol). These trigger the stress response in the body. Reducing stimulants can increase our energy levels, improve concentration and mood and reduce our overall level of stress. This puts us in a stronger position to face whatever challenges we face, in-cluding State exams. If you really need that coffee, try limit consumption to be-fore lunchtime as it may disturb sleep if consumed later in the day.Never skip meals, especially breakfast:This is a really common habit people adopt when stressed. Beginning the day on an empty stomach is a significant physical stress on the body, adding to our overall stress levels.Eat lots of vegetables Aim for 6-8 servings per day in a wide variety of colours. This will provide nutri-ents such as the B-vitamins (important for memory, cognitive ability and energy pro-duction), vitamin C, Zn and magnesium which are vital in times of stress. Eating 3+ portions of dark green leafy veg (spin-ach, kale, broccoli).per day may slow mental decline by up to 40%.Take regular exercise20 minutes of exercise 3-4times a week helps relieve stress, tension and anxi-ety. Walking, yoga or Pilates are ideal for stress release. Take regular breaks from study with either a short, brisk walk or a few yoga / Pilates exercises. Combine Food GroupsAt every meal and snack, include good quality protein (the building blocks for the production of neuro-transmitters), good quality fat (particularly omega3 to boost alertness and improve brain function) and complex carbohydrates (whole grains, vegetables). This combination will pro-vide a steady supply of energy throughout the day.Good Luck Everyone!!Anna Ryan, Dip.
