The fun fundraising chal- lenge has its sights set on raising €75,000 through hill walks, of many varieties and degrees of difficulty, taking place across the country from Sunday 22 nd September. People interested in getting involved can register their support for just €16 at www. jackandjill.ie – equivalent to the cost of one hour of home nursing care. local hill, climbing the office steps, abseil- ing a local landmark, surfing the crest of a wave, etc. Whether it’s one person or 100 people signing up, it really is the taking part that counts. No Care Like Home Care Each day, Jack & Jill organises teams of nurses and carers to provide nursing and respite care to 350 families in their own homes across the country. Last year, Jack and Jill funded 123,884 hours of home nursing care to the families under its wing and that included up to 80 hours per month for children at end-of-life stage. Jack and Jill nurses are there when they are needed most, day or night, including weekends, with no waiting list. This is there- fore an opportune time to look after our immune system in a bid to stay healthy this term and our diet is an excellent way to do this. Including the following foods regularly will support your immune system and ward off those nasty cold and flu viruses: • Pro-biotic/fermented foods (e.g. live yoghurt, sauerkraut, kefir, etc) can support a healthy colony of bacteria in the gut, which constitutes 70-80% of our immune system. This may help keep bacteria, viruses and fungi at bay, balance inflammation and reduce food and environmental intolerances. • Garlic is a great general immune booster as it has anti-oxidant, anti- inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. For best results the garlic should be eaten raw or added at the very end of the cooking process. • Ginger has anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties. Praised for it's ability to open nasal passages, clear congestion and ease nausea it is an excellent ally in the battle against colds and flu. • Omega 3 fats (found in oily fish, nuts and seeds) are anti-inflammatory, strengthen cell membranes and in- crease the activity of white blood cells, thereby increasing resistance to infection and speeding up healing. • Citrus fruits tend to be high in vitamin C which helps in- crease production of white blood cells (key to fighting infections). Because vitamin C cannot be stored in the body, daily intake of vitamin C is essential for a healthy immune system. Other sourc- es of vitamin C include peppers, kiwi, papaya and green leafy vegetables. • Nuts, particularly almonds are a good source of vitamin E (and omega-3 fats), which is key to a healthy im- mune system. Other key immune-supportive nutrients include protein, zinc, iron, selenium, vi- tamins A, B6, D and folic acid – most of these can be found in foods such as meat, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds, legumes and green leafy vegetables. And it’s not all about diet. Lifestyle factors such as sleep deprivation are vital - studies show that those who get 7-9 hours sleep regularly have stronger immune systems. Other lifestyle factors include inactivity (moderate levels of regular exercise may reduce susceptibility to illness), stress and stimulants such as caffeine, nicotine and sugar may reduce our immune response so should be reduced or avoided where possible. I possibly make a couple a day, fooling myself that by mak- ing lists, I’m putting order on my life. I love stationary shops (sad! –I know), but they are bursting at the seams with col- oured pens and post its and all sorts of slick list making materials. This is impor- tant because a good-looking list means I’m even more in control, and more likely to carry out the (usually) very ambitious number of tasks I’ve set out for myself. It’s all self-delusion. I cod myself that I live by lists and therefore my life is tidy (it ain’t). I make lists for shopping, and it’s a win for me when I come home with only ten extra items. There are lists which I will com- plete, and crazy aspirational one which I haven’t a snowballs chance in Hell of ever getting to the end of. Easy lists, done in a day and ones that have been floating around in my head for a couple of months now and haven’t even made it onto a page yet. I’m not a procrastinator (I tell myself) -I’m a list-making crack-on let’s get sorted doer, but ac- tually making lists is a form of procrastination, as some items fall to the bottom all the time with very little hope of ever getting done. The trellis’s needed staining this year-a messy job since I have to detangle rose bushes off them first, and although roses are pretty, they are also Oasis Childcare Centre Mornington Co. East Meath’s Leading Childcare Provider since 2005 spiteful, thorny flowers that hurt, anyway the trellis painting was a listed job that kept falling to the bottom. Any excuse not to do it, until with my young ladies Debs looming, I was pushed into it and did it in my usual slapdash manner, gloves on, tin of wood stain in my hand, holding back narky rose bushes with my foot. It took 30 mins which makes me wonder why I left it so long in the first instance. Procrastination! that’s why! I once went around the house with post-it’s detail- ing the dream list of jobs needed in each room.6 months later the post-it’s had flut- tered sadly off the wall with no work com- pleted. So there are lists I make to moti- vate and inspire me to get moving, lists to curb overspending, ones to keep my mind on the task in hand and those, like the post-it’s on the walls, which only serve to de-motivate and depress me as they fall into the category of stuff that will never get done. I’ll continue to make lists though, especially the shopping ones because they stop me coming home with Steam mops (how did I manage without one in fair- ness?!), or 6 massive balls of wool and knitting nee- dles which have never been looked at since – neither purchase was on any list. I have found a solution for the house decorating ones though I’ll make the list after the work is done, that way I’ll feel like I’ve achieved!! §BG PAINTING & DECORATING InterIor & exterIor 25 YEARS EXPERIENCE REFERENCES AVAILABLE FREE CONSULTATIONS & ESTIMATES WALLPAPER ALSO AVAILABLE Contact Brian 086 7308449 Call Nicky - 041 9887128 087 7734344 A Local Business C o s m ic C l e a n www.cosmicclean.ie T&Cs & Minimum Charge applies MAJOR DISCOUNTS for Multiple Rooms Rug Collection & Delivery Service Available Professional Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning SPECIAL OFFER! As an employer, you know that running a great business means having a team of great people, but there may be one person who stands out as being a key player or central in the company's success. This person's knowledge, work, or overall contribution is considered uniquely valu- able to the company. How would your business cope if that person were to pass away, or become seriously ill? What is Key Person Insurance? This is a business-specific life insurance (also known as Business Protection) which can compensate a company for the financial loss and other consequences of the death or serious illness diagnosis of an important member of the business. How does it work? You can take out Key Person Insurance at any stage of your company's lifetime. You will pay a premium on a regular basis, based on the cover that is required. If the unexpected happens and this person dies, or becomes seriously ill, the policy will provide a lump sum to compensate for this event. This can be used to offset any financial losses incurred. It can also be used to contribute to bank loans where the key employee gave a personal guarantee, or to pay off loans made to the company by the key employees. Product features • Protection: If a key employee dies, a cash sum is paid to help maintain the business. • Continuity: Can help minimise interrup- Life Assurance Pensions Income Protection Investments Financial Planning Drumgoole Financial Services is regulated by The Central Bank of Ireland Oran Drumgoole QFA Phone 087 668 6624 Office 041 981 2080 oran@drumgoolebrokerage.ie www.drumgoolebrokerage.ie tion to business activity. • Financial assistance: Can help with bank loans that involved the key person. • Staffing: Can help provide resources to find a suitable replacement for the em- ployee. Who is Key Person Insurance for? This kind of life insurance can be taken out by a company of any size, where there is a need to protect against the loss of an extremely valued employee of high finan- cial or strategic importance to the busi- ness. Deciding on the sum of money to insure the key person is dependent on the company and the reason for insuring that individual. Why take out Key Person Insurance? Availng of this kind of life insurance can give additional security to your business, as it safeguards against the loss of a key employee. As an employer, it can bring you peace of mind in the knowledge that you are protected from the financial fall- out due from the death or incapacity of a very important member of your staff.
