< Previous© November 2019 The Meath Coaster 30 Scoil Oilibhéir Naofa Mess Chef Workshop! T he Mess Chef visited our classes in Loughcrew for some Hal- loween themed cooking. The children enjoyed touching, smelling and explor- ing the different ingredients before tak- ing turns to add and mix the ingredients. When the donuts were cooled they go to dip their donuts into a chocolate mixture and decorate them with a variety of top- pings. The Mess Chef is a ‘cook, Play, Learn’ experience for children based in the Drogheda area. Check her out on Fa- cebook for upcoming workshops. Harvest Festival - We celebrated our second Harvest Festi- val at the Halloween Assembly on Tues 22 nd October. We had a bountiful harvest this year of healthy fruit and vegetables. Our pupils enjoyed every stage of the pro- cess from sowing to harvesting and took immense pride in the produce of their work. Each class carved a unique design on their class pumpkin, grown from seed in our school garden. We must thank our wonderful volunteers Eddie, Noel, Alan and Robin who have helped set up a thriv- ing outdoor learning space and who have inspired out staff and pupils to get out of the classrooms and work with nature. ICT - Digital learning The children in Scoil Oilibhéir Naofa have begun working on our digital learn- ing plan. Our focus is on using technol- ogy to foster collaborative learning and creativity. Infants will be using Puppet- Pals to complement the work being done in Aistear. First and second classes will be using BookCreator. This enables children to consolidate knowledge on a topic (par- ticularly SESE) and to present the infor- mation in a variety of ways that suits dif- ferent learning styles and abilities. Ms. Liddy’s class have been doing a fan- tastic job teaching other classes to use these apps. We are very lucky to have a panel of experts so willing and able to share their knowledge before they leave our school. The Wriggle Roadcaster vis- ited second class this month. The children learnt about creating and ed- iting videos using the Clips app. They did some work with green screens and they also learnt to code Sphero robots. It was a great day and the children were very enthusiastic partici- pants. We hope to have the Roadcaster back in the future. Lessons Based In Drogheda Grammar School, Mornington Road, Drogheda. Ballygarth Manor boys and girls, under the watchful eye of Jim O’Connor, won the Best Youth Project for their beautiful Wildflower Bed and Sunflowers located throughout the village. Aney View took 2 nd prize for Best Small Estate and for the third year running John & Jackie Macken won Best Shop Front. In a new category Clare McEnaney won best front garden. Well done Clare on cre- ating a garden which is a haven for bees and butterflies. A lot of hard work went into getting our village to such a high standard and we very much appreciate all those who gave their time and energy in achieving this. A great deal of thanks goes to Kevin Mul- len who is on the local C.E. Scheme for all his work in the garden. We are now auto- matically entered into the County Awards on the 7 th November. If you would like to come and help out we are usually found in the Community Garden on Monday, Tuesday and Satur- day mornings. All Roads lead to the M1 Julianstown Interchange at City North Julianstown & District Community As- sociation hosted a Public Meeting in The Glenside Hotel on the 16 th October to dis- cuss the chaotic traffic situation in East Meath and South Drogheda. We were rather disappointed with the turnout of residents from the whole locality as the traffic is dramatically increasing by 2% every year. It now stands at 22,000 vehi- cles going through our village on a daily basis and the R132 is now the 16 th busiest road in the country. It is busier than many of the Motorways and National Roads. I’m sure you do realise that all the traf- fic from East Meath and South Drogheda is increasing; our buses and trains are at News From Julianstown & District Community Association By Niamh Bn. Commuters should be worried and need to make this a General Election issue! Remember you may be sitting cosy at home, but what about your children and their children? It is now taking Two Hours in the morning to get from Mornington to Dublin and that is on the Matthews Bus which, as you know, pro- vides a wonderful service for East Meath. Next year it will take Two Hours and Fif- teen Minutes and every year you can add on another fifteen minutes unless some- thing happens about a bypass. We were glad to see that our TDs, Fer- gus O’Dowd, Declan Breathnach, Imelda Munster and Sen. Gerald Nash (represent- ed on night by Rosemary Hannan) are tak- ing the matter seriously, as are our Cllrs, Wayne Harding (Cathaoirleach Meath Co. Co.), Annie Hoey, Sharon Keogan (Cathaoirleach Laytown/Bettystown M. D.), Sharon Tolan, Paddy Meade, Stephen McKee, Tom Behan. In fact at a meeting of Laytown/Bettystown MD they recently passed a motion to have the R132 re-clas- sified a National Road and this will now go forward to the full sitting of Meath Co. Co. on the 7 th November asking Meath Co. Co. to formally request that Minister Shane Ross do this. This will mean addi- tional funding for the upkeep of the road. Meath Co. Co. has €800,000 set aside for Traffic Calming and the Environmental Study has been completed. Next will be the design of the road and then it must go to An Board Pleanála. If Meath Co. Co. doesn’t have enough funds to carry out all the works in the design, they will have to ‘cherry pick’ what they can afford. The Council do NOT have a start date, but ex- pect it to be late 2020 before work com- mences. Julianstown Badminton Julianstown Badminton takes place in Julianstown Community Centre every Tuesday evening at 8pm. New members 18 yrs + always welcome. All standards welcome! Whoever is making the mess we think it’s time for a career change....Banksy you are not!! It’s just like the broken window theory, if it’s not repaired then every window in the building will be broken before long. So now if you tag it we will bag it and restore the sea wall to it’s original state. We attended the annual municipal district Pride of Place awards on 23 rd October. The event was held this year in the ex- cellent Tribe restaurant in Duleek. Con- gratulations to Bettystown Tidy Towns for their Vacant Premises award, and to Julianstown Tidy Towns for their well earned award! We were delighted to see our own James Ellis receive a richly deserved Volunteer of the Year Award for all his hard work and dedication over the years. We would like to take this opportunity to congratu- late James once again. § St. Mary’s Church of Ireland, Julianstown Christmas Tree Festival From Thursday 12 th – Sunday 16 th December A Christmas Tree festival is an event bringing together the local community and organisations. Sharon #TeamTolan© November 2019 The Meath Coaster 38 Please mention The Meath Coaster when replying to advertisements The View From The Kitchen Table, By Geraldine Hughes P oor November gets bad press. It’s the pre -Christmas equivalent of January. Neither month has anything of its own to recommend it. In the same way that Wednesday is referred to as ‘Hump day’ (as in getting over the hump), November and January are sort of hump months but calling them that implies that they are something to be endured, a month to be got through, rather than enjoyed. That’s not good enough because November is over four weeks long so I’m going to work hard to find reasons to enjoy it. First off, we get an extra hour in bed with daylight saving and yep, that actually happens at the end of October but the ef- fects last about a week. Who couldn’t do with an extra hour in bed? especially if you have soft warm winter sheets on that make it difficult to get up in the mornings. Its Hygge (to borrow a Scandinavian term meaning comfy or cosy) At first thought, Scandinavian and cosy don’t really go to- gether- are they not more rolling about in the snow af- ter a sauna and beating them- selves with birch branches?! I’m thinking of Ikea interi- ors, of pale walls and blonde wood minimalist furniture, but throw in a roaring fire, fleece blankets and maybe a log cabin and it makes more sense. November usually means the coffee shops get competi- tive with yummy sounding wintery drinks. Chai lattes, ginger bread cappuccinos, red velvet hot chocolate – Oasis Childcare Centre Mornington Co. East Meath’s Leading Childcare Provider since 2005 the names alone make me want to curl up in an oversize armchair, with my hands wrapped around a hot mug even though I don’t actually drink any of the above. I have a taste for more bitter drinks (a sign of being a Psychopath, I’m told) black cof- fee, gin and tonic, bitter lemon. But even Psychopaths need a day off now and then so occasionally I’ll have a hot chocolate but I put a tiny bit of chilli powder into it. Try it. It’s nice- You’re welcome! This time of the year, because the weather is usually fairly bleak- November is the king of bleak! We just have to embrace it and use it as an excuse to carb up with big one-pot-wonders. All the lovely warming spices and flavours! Fire all the ingredi- ents in a pot in the morning and let every- one help themselves. Sure, it’s hardly like cooking at all! Mop all of the above up with lots of bread, and finally, cover up the resulting weight gain with winter wool- lies. Did I mention this is probably a good time to add to your ward- robe? We get ten months wear out of winter clothes so you can consider them an investment, and then is there anything better than getting well wrapped up in them and going for a long walk on a freezing beach? exhilarating!! I managed all of that with- out mentioning Christmas. The Irish language has that one right -December, as gaeilge, is Nollaig which means Christmas, which means it has a whole month to itself, so it can wait a bit while we allow November to shine. §BG PAINTING & DECORATING InterIor & exterIor 25 YEARS EXPERIENCE REFERENCES AVAILABLE FREE CONSULTATIONS & ESTIMATES WALLPAPER ALSO AVAILABLE Contact Brian 086 7308449 Call Nicky - 041 9887128 087 7734344 A Local Business C o s m ic C l e a n www.cosmicclean.ie T&Cs & Minimum Charge applies MAJOR DISCOUNTS for Multiple Rooms Rug Collection & Delivery Service Available Professional Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning SPECIAL OFFER!
