Both staff and children had great fun dressing up for the day, as the pho- tos will demonstrate. Almost €1,000 was raised on the day and we thank parents and guardians for their contributions, which are so important in helping us improve re- sources available to your children. Fire Drill: The school completed its first Fire Drill this term and we were pleased with the timely manner in which children left their classes and went to their designated Fire Station, in a calm and orderly fashion. Be Safe - Be Seen! As the clocks change, the days are darker and the weather gets increasingly wet and cold. Please be mindful of providing your children with reflective armbands and plac- ing reflective stickers on their school bags to enable them to be more visible to traffic. Réalt na Mara Cailíní already have 5 Green Flags under their belt, but there’s always more that can be achieved. The school is so lucky to have such enthusiastic pupils who will champion the environment in the months ahead. Mrs O’Reilly and Ms Mc Manus are looking forward to working with them in order to make the school an eco-friendlier place for everybody. © November 2019 The Meath Coaster 25 Fifth Class Local History Tour The fifth-class pupils have been research- ing the rich history of the area, including the origin of the local place names and their meanings. They investigated ele- ments of sites on the iPads, such as The Maiden Tower, The Lady’s Finger, and the Star of the Sea Graveyard and Medi- eval Church. The children were keen to see these plac- es in reality so Mrs Campbell and Ms Mc Manus brought the children on a guided tour of Mornington. The buildings were even more impressive than they looked online. The children completed a field- trip booklet on-site, and they had lots of thought-provoking questions about the lives of people in this community many years ago. Some of the children were able to show the others, graves belonging to their ancestors in the graveyard overlook- ing The Boyne Estuary. It was wonderful to learn about the fishing-traditions of the area. The children were blessed with good -weather for the trip, and had a delicious picnic on Mornington Beach. We appreci- ate Mr Lis and Ms Hanan, who generous- ly gave up their spare time to accompany the classes on the local tour. Finally, the fifth-class girls were treated to an afternoon ‘Question and Answer’ ses- sion with Ms Weir. With a wealth of local knowledge, she was able to fill in the gaps to the children’s many questions. The children’s projects on the Local History of Mornington now adorn the walls of the classrooms and hallways. We hope to use this rich archive of information for future history classes in the years ahead. Maths Week was so much fun in 3 rd Class October has been a busy month for all the girls in 3 rd class. Maths week 2019 took place recently. There were many excit- ing activities in the classroom that week including a maths trail and various maths games. But the highlight of the week was definitely the girls learning a very catchy song focusing on lines and angles to the tune of YMCA. The girls also de- veloped their estimation skills and had to guess how many sweets were in the sweet jar……182 sweets to be precise!! As the girls guessed within 10 sweets of the total amount, they all got to share them during their Halloween party. We have also been completing our art project based on the book ‘The Dot’ by Peter Reynolds which has created a lovely splash of colour in the school hallway. We have had a very successful start to our new school year and are looking forward to a great year together! 6th Class exploring historical Drogheda© November 2019 The Meath Coaster 26 Ms. Moore’s third class has been very busy preparing for Halloween. They have been learning all about the history of the festival and researching the origins of the modern day traditions like trick or treating, putting on costumes and carv- ing pumpkins. They have also been in- terviewing older members of their fami- lies to find out about what Halloween in Ms. Meagher's 3rd Class Ms. Moore’s third class the past was like. The girls have been so creative modelling clay under the theme of Halloween. They produced witches, pumpkins, witches hats, broomsticks and even spooky cats! The dáltaí fully bought into the Hell and Back credo that no one is left behind, as- sisting each other in the completion of this endurance challenge.
