< Previous© June 2019 The Meath Coaster 30 W hen you receive this edition of the Coaster we hope that many of you will have come to visit us over the Bank holiday weekend. A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes; we are not quite there yet, so watch this space. The highlight in May was 23 rd May when we welcomed the Elders in our community to our Nature Connection Day. Gathered at the top end of the organic Walled Gar- den, Natasha took us through our senses, taste, touch, smell, sight and sound. It was both a fun and thought provoking morning and the fun continued with some amazing families in the afternoon. We hope those of you have visited en- joyed the new Power House display in the Energy Park, which directs exploration of the external elements, the wind turbine, solar panels and the electric vehicle. Each example has questions associated with it and a selection of “ facts”. The new So- lar Array of 10 panels is located on the south-facing roof. Each panel is rated at 300W and feeds into an inverter system, which connects to the building’s electric- ity connection. A Battery and Charger System has been installed which are very low maintenance and selected for the en- ergy requirements of the building. A 400 watt Wind turbine has been installed and connected to an inverter and battery pack which will store energy for LED lighting and possibly power the pump from the water feature. Lately all the bad news about the environ- ment can be overwhelming and we are in- clined to shrug “But I can’t do anything”. It’s true each of us on our own cannot do much, but together we can make a big dif- ference. What Can We Do? We can keep it simple and start by mak- ing one change at a time. It was said that if everyone in Ireland re- cycled just one extra piece of hard plas- tic each week we would recycle an extra 250 million more plastic items a year. One Huge Difference! Just think of the difference we could make if we avoided single use plastic, ate a bit more local food in season, or tried some of our own home made cleaning products. In the garden we could make our own compost to improve our soil for optimum plant health or try our hand at growing some fruit or veg and taste the difference. Maybe could cut the grass less often, or mulch the weeds and avoid weed killer. The Benefits We would have better air quality in our homes and save money into the bargain on cleaning materials and compost. We would rediscover the taste of really fresh fruit and veg, and be amazed at the taste. Gardening and eating fresh food is good for the environment and for us physically and mentally. One last word, as locals and newcomers we owe a big vote of thanks to all the vol- unteers working tirelessly to make East Meath better and better every year, the TUS and CE schemes who contribute so much and not forgetting our local Council and Councillors. S cenes of joy and delight greeted our hurlers when they returned home on Friday with the Breaga Cup. This much coveted prize was fought over by six schools in the region and it is a keystone in the development of hurling in our primary schools. We beat off strong opposition last year to win the title and, under the tutelage of Mr Arthur, Mr Culligan and Mr Ryan our boys have steadily developed sports- manship, tactics and especially hurling skills in their quest for glory. The past four years have seen the develop- ment of great hurling skills in our lads aid- ed and abetted by their parents, our teach- ers, our local GAA club St Colmcille's and competitions such as the Breaga Cup. Judging from the skills displayed on the day, hurling in East Meath has a bright future. Donacarney Boys Visit the Old School Mr Lynch`s Third Class took the time ma- chine back to the old school in Donacarney recently. Back all the way to 1873, in fact, © June 2019 The Meath Coaster 33 when the school first opened to children. The red brick school now houses the lovely Mornington Preschool playgroup in a warm, inviting setting. And it also has the commu- nity hall which was originally a classroom for the boys of Donacarney school. Signs of the old classroom are clearly seen in that room. The boarded up fireplace was once the only source of heating for the large room. The original doorways and wainscot panels are still intact, as are the window frames with their brass fittings. Noise carried easily in the room but the boys were reminded that back in the old-© June 2019 The Meath Coaster 34 en times children were encouraged to be seen and not heard! Very different times indeed! Mairead McGuinness Visits Our School Fine Gael MEP and Vice President of the European Parliament Mairead McGuinness has been a regular visi- tor to Donacarney Boys school in recent years. Keen supporter of their Blue Star Flag programme, she came to visit Ms Gerrard`s and Ms Mullen`s sixth classes to support their work and learning on the European Union. The presentation featured a fantastic per- formance by the boys of a debate in the European parliament. Mairead evidently enjoyed the presenta- tions and a lively question and answer session followed demonstrating not only the boys knowledge of European affairs, but also their concerns about the burning issues of the day such as climate change, social media and Brexit. The country is in safe hands if these boys become involved in politics in the future! Donacarney Boys Welcome Marian Harkin Independent MEP Marian Harkin made a return visit to Bunscoil Buachaillí Réalt na Mara in the week before the European election. Canvassing wasn`t on her agen- da, however, as the seasoned parliamen- tarian has announced her retirement from the European parliament. © June 2019 The Meath Coaster 35 A former teacher, and keen community activist, she evidently relishes engaging with politicians and voters of the future. The gathering in the school hall featured drama, recitations, presentations, dance and song from the whole school based on the theme of European history, culture and politics. It also featured our work with four other European schools as part of our Erasmus project on UNESCO sites. Marian fielded questions from the young audience afterwards on her life as a poli- tician and the work of the European par- liament. It included the very apt question “How is Brexit going anyway?” to which she responded with a smile “Very slow- ly”! § Fee €80 includes materials Full details www.littlemusicmakers.ie Contact: Maria 087 933 0777 mariamusicmakers@gmail.com Music Summer Camp 4yrs to 8yrs July 8th – 12th Venue - Drogheda Presbyterian Church (opp Grange Rath Estate) Monday to Friday 10am to 1pmFOR SALE 87 Eastham Court, Bettystown 2 bed & 2 bath FOR SALEFOR SALE FOR SALE Price region €185,000 63 The Anchorage, Bettystown 3 bed & 2 bath Price region €155,000 15 Brabazon Green, Bettystown 4 bed & 2 bath Price region €260,000 208 An Colm Choille, Bettystown 2 bed & 2 bath Price region €170,000 62 Northlands, Bettystown 3 bed & 2 bath Price region €205,000 314 An Dunnog, Bettystown 2 bed & 2 bath Price region €180,000 29 Grange Rath, Drogheda 3 bed & 3 bath Price region €250,000 FOR SALE FOR SALEFOR SALE FOR SALE 19 Larrix Court, Duleek 3 bed & 2 bath Price region €195,000 FOR SALE 17 The Green, Woodside, Bettystown 2 bed & 2 bath Price region: €180,000RENTED & MANAGED Inse Bay, Laytown Sevitt Manor, Bettystown Castlemartin, Bettystown Castlemartin, Bettystown PROPERTIES WANTED FOR SALE & TO RENT www.bohanhyland.ie Meath Office Bohan Hyland & Associates Bettystown Town Centre, Bettystown, Co.
