If I reflect on the season honestly there are a few things I could have done different- ly. Have they had a major impact on my team, no they are 8 they don’t care if feel I was good as long as they got to play they are happy and as the player development play stated that’s what it’s all about. Never the less I’m going to put it out there that taking the time to reflect on my sea- son allows me to move forward, progress and prepare for what September holds. This article is going to look at five mis- takes I’ve made within coaching, the les- son I learnt and therefore areas you could reflect on in your own practice. (Spot the teacher) 1. The way you engage with children As a coach starting out within the acad- emy last year I had the chance to work alongside some very good coaches, Dave, Robbie, Ru, Sinead and Alan to name but a few. An amazing grounding for me as a not so young coach! I vividly remember delivering a session, everything had gone great, and the prac- tices had really flowed and in my mind had been a great success. Walking off the pitch at the end one of the players, well let’s be honest my son Luke came over to me. As clear as anything I can still re- member him saying “Mammy, I really enjoyed today but you were really bossy when you spoke to me and I didn’t like it”. I was devastated. The fact that I had made my son feel this way, and possibly not want to play football again, is a hor- rendous feeling to have. Lesson: Consider carefully the words and tone you use, it’s one of the only things you can really control in the delivery of a coaching session, and they can have a big impact with young people. 2. Helping the players get better When I started coaching, way back when (no soccer obviously) I copied what I’d been taught and the same came last year. When I played soccer we did warm up laps and drills till we were blue in the face and if we go luck had a five a side match at the end. But looking back, I didn’t know any dif- ferent, I just thought it was the way coach- ing was done. My delivery mimicked that of my coach. I copied her coaching style (very command), her way of working with players (incredibly direct) and I fol- lowed this lead. I never realised there was another way until more recently. In reflec- tion I just wanted to fit in and do what oth- ers did, to keep to look like I knew what I was doing. Continued over....Next >
