He even bought Mrs McGovern a hazmat suit. We measured the correct amount of the chemicals using pipettes and graduated cylinders. When they were all mixed they created a brilliant colourful foam. It wasn‘t hard to tidy up the chem-icals we just rolled up the bin bags and newspapers. We really enjoyed the visit. Thank you Mr. Duggan!World Book DayOur pupils had a wonderful World Book Day, with many coming into class dressed as their favourite book characters. Some of our teachers even joined in the fun!Engineering Week 4th – 8th of MarchReport by James & Keeva in Ms McGovern’s 4th ClassAs part of Engineers Week Mr. Eoghan Duggan, a chemical engineer visited some of our fourth classes. He spoke to us about the different types of en-gineering and how important they are in making the things we use every day. We then got to work like a chemical engi-neer and made elephant tooth-paste, it was so fun. Fun Fact: He is Ms McGovern’s Brother too!!! For safety and to keep everything clean we had to School Trophy visitOur pupils were delighted to welcome players from the Meath U17 Leinster Champions team, along with Neil Kane © March 2019 The Meath Coaster33(school coach), to show off their recently won silverware. Endy Enchoya, David Bell, Cian Flynn and Oisin Miland visited and shared with us their training regimes and match day experiences at Croke Park.Science Blast at the RDS – 6th March Our 6th Class took part in the Science Blast exhibition at the RDS in Dublin. Our pro-ject was entitled: ‘Can we use methods al-ternative to fossil fuels to power everyday transport?’ We had worked very hard in preparation for the exhibition; research-ing, collecting and analysing data and building our own mini prototypes that can run on renewable energy. It was difficult not to become really passionate about our planet and the dangers of climate change. We were so happy to receive our trophy at the end of the day. © March 2019 The Meath Coaster34Meath Primary Schools’ Cross Country Competition – 22nd MarchWe participated in the Meath Primary Schools’ Cross Country Competition at Navan Adventure Sports Centre. Teams of girls and boys from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class-es represented the school admirably with some great runs on a tough course. Shane Reilly from 5th class received a medal for being placed 3rd in his race. This was a great achievement for Shane, competing against some fantastic runners from all the other schools in Co. Meath. Well done Shane!A great day was had by all and the not so great weather did not dampen our spirits!Bridges TourOur 6th Classes also took part in a Bridges Tour, learning about the engineering and design that is involved in the construction of the many iconic bridges in our local area. A very informative day!Confirmation Day – 27th March Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh celebrated a special day of Confirmation on March 27th. Our boys and girls were resplendent in their Confirmation Robes, as was our school choir. Bishop Deenihan was very complimentary of the lovely readings, the artwork in the church, the choir singing and the beautifully behaved children as they took their Confirmation vows. We celebrated with parents, families and teachers afterwards in our school. A big thank you to Bishop Deenihan and Fr Denis for a beautiful ceremony, to all of our staff who worked behind the scenes - particularly our 6th Class teachers who worked hard preparing the children for their big day, and our Parents Association who organised and served the excellent food. Thank you to everyone involved in making it a truly memorable day for our pupils and their families. §© March 2019 The Meath Coaster35News From Julianstown & District Community AssociationBy Niamh Bn. Uí LoinsighMeath Anti Litter League - We are now in week 3 of the Meath County Council Anti Lit-ter Initiative and thank you to all who are help-ing to pick up litter in our village and have it looking so good. Don’t forget the An Taisce National Spring Clean takes place in Julianstown on the 6th April starting at 10 a.m. Meet at Whitecross National School and litter pickers, high vis vests, bags and gloves will be provided. Many thanks to Meath County Council & An Taisce for sup-plying the equipment, and council have also supplied the skip. Thanks also to Laytown Tidy Towns who have given us a loan of their ‘Tidy Town Volunteers at Work’ sign. We hope that you will come and give a hand clean up all the outlying roads, Roads being cleaned are Mosney, Briarleas, Moorechurch, Dubli n Road, Drogheda Road, Sandy Hall, Duleek, Bal-lygarth, Duleek and Laytown Road down as far as Sonairte. Lights on the BridgeSome time ago a Rural Regeneration and Development Grant was made available to villages and thanks goes to Leo & Ais-ling Monahan for applying for same on behalf of Julianstown & District Commu-nity Association and securing €40,000 for the village. Julianstown is an area of Ar-chitectural Conservation and many of the buildings, including the bridge, are pro-tected structures. For this reason it was felt by our residents, when compiling our Village Design Statement, that the present lights on the bridge were most inappropri-ate. This week Meath County Council be-gan work on changing the lights and will also be installing a four faced clock tower near the bus stop at The Lime Kiln. The new lights look fantastic and will save money while improving safety and de-creasing light pollution. This adds a new dimension to our beautiful village and as funding becomes available we hope to change all the street lights !Planning Application for 250+ hous-es on south side of Drogheda – The Julianstown & District Community As-sociation has writen a submission to An Bord Planala on behalf of its residents about the detrimental effect this will have on traffic, noise and air pollution for our village. Whilst, we are aware that new housing is needed, we do need to have the traffic problem in our village addressed sooner rather than later. If anyone would like a copy of this submission, please con-tact us a julianstowndca@gmail.com.© March 2019 The Meath Coaster36World Book DayWorld Book Day was a great success at Whitecross National School. All the boys and girls were encouraged to use their imagination by dressing up and bring-ing their favourite book characters to life. Children chatted about their favour-ite books, quizzes were held, new books were explored, bookmarks were decorat-ed, stories were shared, favourite authors and illustrators were discussed, opinions were shared and most importantly of all reading was celebrated. Julianstown Tidy TownsOur village is blooming at the moment and here are some photos for you to muse over.Julianstown Tidy Towns are very grateful to all the Volunteers who turn up every Saturday to give a hand in the garden. We could do with a little bit more help, so if anyone has an hour or two to spare we would love the extra help. Just come along on Saturday morning around 10.30 to 11.00 am and you will definitely get something to do! We are a lovely group who then enjoy a chat over a cuppa! Tom popped into the garden during the week as he had noticed that some of the fenc-ing had fallen down along the roadside and within a couple of minutes had them fixed. Kevin, who is on the Community Employment Scheme, is a treasure and has been litter picking in the village and lovingly mowing the grass in the gar-© March 2019 The Meath Coaster37den. PhotosThe loss of photos can be heartbreaking so taking some time to ensure they are backed up securely is a good investment of your time. The problems I see most often with customers are: Lack of a clear understanding of Cloud backup options and/or lack of understanding on how to effectively backup to either the Cloud or a local device. The other issue of course is finding the time in busy schedules. As we can all be accused of being a bit snap happy it is not unusual to accumu-late a large amount of photos consuming a good whack of space. YouTube contains a myriad of HOW TO tutorials on how to backup data from a va-riety of devices. This YouTube tutorial https://youtu.be/Iw-EvM6gLBA explaining how to back-up your windows 10 computer to a local device was easy to understand and follow. If you just want to backup your photos, and providing your photos don’t take up more than 64 gigabytes, you can use a USB memory stick. After 64 gigabyte USB memory stick prices start to creep nearer the cost of a 1 Terabyte USB hard drive. If you want to backup your entire computer then an external USB drive is the recommended option. There are a myriad of free and buyable backup apps that allow you to store multi-ple copies of you data on different devices or locations. On the blog version of this article I’ve listed prices for backup devic-es from a few Irish sources. The Two Copy Rule2019 marks my 38th year in technology. During those years I’ve seen countless examples where technicians including myself fell victim to the three monkeys of disaster (hubris, arrogance, and as-sumption). It’s nothing new and as we all know part of the human condition. In 2019 I must unfortunately report the three monkeys continue to prosper. Facebook has just admitted to storing hundreds of millions of passwords in plain text but has assured us that they were not accessible by anyone outside of Facebook except for some 2,000 engineers and developers. As of January 2018 Facebook employed some 35,587 people. If you wish to de-fend yourself from becoming a victim always maintain at least two independent copies of your valuable data on two inde-pendent devices AND ensure these devic-es are securely stored. Take ownership of backing up your data and hopefully you will never need to use it. §© March 2019 The Meath Coaster39Easter CeremoniesMornington Church Looking forward to seeing you all for the Easter Ceremonies Sacrament of Reconciliation Saturday 13th April at 6pm Mass in Mornington Church Wednesday 17th April 7.00pm Chrism Mass in Cathedral of Christ the King, Mullingar.
