The girls braved the wet and windy con-ditions and battled hard against local schools, Duleek, Mount Hanover, White-cross, and An Bhradain Feasa. The girls missed out on a place in the final but put on a super display of football on the day. Well done girls! §© March 2019 The Meath Coaster22Wild WatchersOur native wildlife is all around us all the time and yet you may never see it. Hedgehogs scurry along in the dark and seals dive deep beneath our seas. Foxes stealth-ily negotiate our fields and boundaries while in the dead of night badgers snuf-fle through the leaves. At this time of year our wildlife is waking from hibernation, returning from overseas and beginning to have their young. They are particularly vulner-able at this point and often fall victim to road traffic ac-cidents, hedge cutting or ad-verse weather. It is incredibly important that we keep an extra eye out and give a helping hand where needed to ensure their survival. Should you come across an injured or orphaned animal PLEASE DO NOT touch or pick it up unless it is in immediate danger. Please phone us on 087 620 1270, we have a nationwide network of rescue vol-unteers, (including some local to your area) with our rehab center being in Kil-dare. If you absolutely need to move an injured animal, place it in a quiet, dark and warm place. Then call for help. Again, put it somewhere quiet, dark and warm away from human sounds, including radio or tv. Wild creatures are not calmed by contact with humans. Talking to them and strok-ing them can only increase their stress and is of course putting you at risk of injury. The animal although sick or injured, is wild and will defend itself.Over the coming months we will keep you up to date with what to expect in terms of wildlife to watch out for and enjoy. We are so lucky to have such an array of different species in Ireland and it is so uplifting to hear the different sounds filling the air. §© March 2019 The Meath Coaster24Coláiste na hInseChampions’ League Final for Under 15 BoysOur Under 15 and under 17 Boys’ teams were rewarded for their North Leinster titles with a place in the elite Champions’ League competition, contested by the top teams in Leinster. The under 17s were un-fortunate to be defeated in their quarter-fi-nal by a highly-fancied CBS Naas. The Under 15 travelled to Parnell Grounds for their quarter-final against Chanel Col-lege. The home side proved tough oppo-nents, but the CNI team carried the day with a 2-0 win. They followed this up with a narrow 2-1 win against CBS Carlow in the semi-final to become only the second CNI team to reach a Leinster Champions’ League final. With the other semi-final yet to be played, the team must wait to dis-cover their challengers and the venue for the final. Our first year team also reached a North Leinster final after an impressive cam-paign. However, they were narrowly de-feated by Ardgillan College. DebatingAs we approach the business end of the year Coláiste na hInse has a number of big debates that our pupils are involved in. Last weekend, Eve White and Oisin Ward O'Brien got through to the Senior National Finals in UCD, eventually fin-ishing third in the country. On March 28th, Kayla Boyle in second year is in the Junior Debating Final in UCD.On April 6th we host the National Finals Day of the Junior Debating National Mace - the largest debating competition in the country, with Mairead McGuin-ness MEP chairing the final. Having already qualified for the North Leinster final, the team were convincing winners against Mullingar. The team then qualified for the Leinster play-off against Baltinglass. In a much tighter encounter, the team displayed admirable grit and teamwork to eke out a two point win and a semi-final place. The All-Ireland semi-final against Boher-bue Comprehensive School of Cork was the team’s third game in six days (with many players representing their club sides during the week as well). A slow start saw the team fall seven points behind, but the team showed the fight, determination and skill that has characterised their campaign to fight their way back into the match. How-ever, they were unable to draw level, and lost narrowly. Congratulations to the team on a fantastic season as they progressed further than any previous CNI team.Ten Year Anniversary Gala DinnerThank you to all those that supported the event. It was a wonderful way to celebrate our successes over the past 10 years. LMETB Chief Executive Martin O’Brien spoke in particular about the relationships in CNI and the impact that has on the stu-dents and the community. Peter Kierans, former CE of LMETB, spoke about the setting up of the school and mentioned the first teachers, parents and daltai to take the leap of faith and work in a start-up school. Inion McCarrick spoke about the relationships also and the community and clan that has been built up in CNI. Our wonderful current and past pupils sang and played wonderful music on the night. Continued over....© March 2019 The Meath Coaster26The Parents’ Association presented the school with a piece of art by Julie Crone which will be on display soon. The for-mal part of the night finished with Aaron Finnegan who won an Irish Times Hen-nessy Literary Awards 2018 and wrote a piece about his experience in school. It was a thoughtful and still thought-provok-ing piece about his experience of CNI.Finally, the night ended with lots of chat with past pupils, some of whom are quali-fied nurses, personal trainers, student teachers… and much, much more!Erin Englishby King Wins Second Prize in Robert Ballagh Art CompetitionCongratulations to Idirbliain student Erin King Englishby who finished second in the Robert Ballagh Art Competition. CNI has a fantastic tradition in the competi-tion, with students winning it on two oc-casions and placing well most years. This is an outstanding achievement from Erin, a young student who has received a num-ber of awards for her art in recent years.Midlands PrisonIB dáltaí visited the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise over two days. It was a hugely informative and enjoyable experience as they were led by the governor of the prison through each part of the prison, including the cells, corridors, school, exercise facili-ties, visitors’ rooms and the control cen-tre. Students also observed prison guards in riot training and had the opportunity to try on the helmets and hold the shields. It was a fascinating insight into life in Ire-land’s biggest prison.Rang Brennan Attend “The Cripple of Inishmaan”Rang Brennan visited the Gaiety Theatre recently for McDonagh’s “The Cripple Of Inishmaan”. The students particularly enjoyed meeting up with Junior Infants for some paired reading!6th class is taking part in the Junior En-trepreneur Project. The children have researched products which they hope to produce and sell in the coming weeks. For each business idea, the children had to cost their products, make samples and present their ideas to their peers.
