German Ambassador visits Drogheda Grammar SchoolOn Tuesday the 25th of September 2018, Drogheda Grammar School had the hon-our of a visit from the German Ambassa-dor to Ireland Deike Potzel. Ambassador Potzel was greeted by Ger-man students, before a performance by the 5th Year music class under the guid-ance of Ms Norris. Songs included Air on the G String by Bach, an Irish version of Fun’s “Some Night” and “Muss i denn”, a folk song from the Swabian region of Germany. The Ambassador then delivered a very en- Amy White, Ms M Doherty, Frau Potzel and Jack Finegan presenting gifts to the ambassador© October 2018 The Meath Coaster21gaging speech and interacted warmly with our students of German. She spoke about her work as an ambassador and the many career opportunities which exist for learn-ers of German. A question and answer ses-sion ensued and Ambassador Potzel very thoughtfully answered all questions posed by the students. German students, Amy White and Jack Finnegan, later presented the ambassador with flowers, an Irish gift and a book on the history of Drogheda Grammar School. Ambassador Potzel gifted a set of German language books for the school’s library. Ambassador Potzel’s warm and engaging approach proved to be a big hit with the students of German and they really appre-ciated the time she made available for the students of Drogheda Grammar School. 1st year Bonding week and Parents BBQOur new first years had a great introduc-tion to their new school as our student mentor programme kicked into action in the first few weeks. With classes in the morning and fun activities in the evening it all built towards a great teambuilding day on Friday. Our 5th year mentors en-sured everything ran smoothly and that each student in their group felt welcomed, cared for and looked after. The opening month finished off with a BBQ for all new parents and students in the school. After schools activitiesThe after schools activities programme is up and running. As usual there has been a broad programme of activities provided..ranging from rugby to 3d printing, chess to hockey, debating, Amnesty interna-tional, computer coding, basketball, net-ball, film club, technology ,photography, car restoration and many many more. It is great to see such activity every evening and see all staff and students involved and learning new skills outside the traditional classroom environment. Higher OptionsAll TY students began their careers and 3rd level programme for the year with a visit to the Higher options conference in the RDS. With the Junior Cycle behind them we now turn their thoughts to preparation for the Leaving Cert, University and beyond. Uí LoinsighHalloween in the Garden 2018“In an era long passed, all of the fires of Ireland were extinguished at sundown on October 31st and a single blazing bon-fire was lit at the epicentre of the annual feast of the dead -Samhain had begun at the Hill of Ward (Tlachtga - near Athboy). The Druidical priests gathered the people together and set places with food offerings for those unseen who had crossed in to the land of the dead. For between the nights of October 31st and November 1st, the barriers between the worlds - which closed the doors of percep-tion throughout the year - would fall away and the dimensions would interact freely with one another. At this time, when the harvest faded and the darker time of win-ter began, the known and the unknown would meet and dance in the flickering light of the celebratory flames. You are all invited to help us to re-enact this ancient tradition at our family-friend-ly event at 6.30 pm on Wednesday Octo-ber 31st during our Spirits of Meath Hal-loween Festival. This Event is being run by Julianstown & District Community Association for all the residents of Julianstown & Surround-ing areasAll welcome to come along in Fancy Dress and enjoy the eveningCead míle failte go gach duine!Supervalu National Tidy Towns ResultsJulianstown went up by an amazing 9 points this year from 299 to 308. Well done and thank you to all the residents of our village who helped make this pos-sible. The judge said it was a pleasure to walk through our village, that we have improved the environment and brought people in the community together with our wonderful events in the village garden which he said ‘is a joy to walk through’ . “We note that Julianstown is situated in an Architectural Conservation Area (ACA). The Limekiln pub is a highlight and was a blaze of colour on the day of our vis-it. The orange and grey colour scheme works well here, creating a pleasant vil-lage atmosphere. Little Joey’s Pre-school is fresh and inviting with more colourful displays. Your perseverance in relation to the Old Mill Hotel is impressive – thank you for the ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots. They tell the story”. You can read this full report on www.tidytowns.ie The Julianstown Tidy Towns Committee is urgently looking for new members to help with the upkeep of the village and garden.
