Music lovers are welcome to attend this fundraising event. The Julianstown Youth Orchestra (JYO) founded in 2011, provides a uniquely high quality music experience for its mem-bers, who are drawn from counties Meath, Louth and Dublin. It has grown quickly and now has approximately 100 mem-bers, organised into 2 orchestras; a junior orchestra consisting of primary school children and a senior orchestra consisting mainly of secondary school students. The Junior Orchestra provides a fun and socia-ble outlet where players of all abilities can enjoy playing their instruments together. The Senior Orchestra is a continuation of the musical journey where players can challenge their musical talents and im-prove their skills while making and devel-oping friendships.Membership of the orchestra is open and new members to both Senior and Junior Orchestras are welcome. Potential players should be taking formal lessons in their chosen instrument and JYO facilitates tui-tion in a wide range of instruments. The string section has violins, violas, cellos, double basses and harp. The wind and brass sections can have flutes, piccolo, oboes, clarinets, bass clarinet, trumpets, French horns, trombones and bassoons. There is also a very exciting percussion section complete with timpani drums, bass drums, snare drums, cymbals and a glockenspiel as well as many other small-er percussion instruments. Many of the players own their instruments, but the JYO also has an instrument rental policy particularly for some of the more expen-sive and less common instruments. Parents and potential players are welcome to come to Cólaiste na hInse any Friday evening from 6.30-8.30pm or Saturday morning from 8.50-10.15am to observe the Senior and Junior rehearsals respec-© May 2018 The Meath Coaster23tively. Committee members are always on hand to provide information and answer any questions. It could be the beginning of a long musical journey for a player who would like to develop musical skills and make new friends with a shared interest. The JYO has enjoyed many highlights in its short history and the orchestra has per-formed in the The Helix, Glasnevin, Sol-stice Arts Centre, Navan, the Barbican, Drogheda and the Convention Centre, Dublin. JYO has also performed as part of the festival operated by the Irish As-sociation of Youth Orchestras in the Na-tional Concert Hall, where the orchestra received an award for development of a youth orchestra. It has undertaken projects with both the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra.Additional information on jyo.ieOpportunities for Adult Learners - 2018Interested in finding out about opportu-nities for adult learners to return to edu-cation or take up a training course? Al-though only three residents took part they managed to collect eight bags of rubbish on the first half mile of this road. They started at the Laytown Road and worked up as far as the stud farm. Great job!We have mentioned on more than one occasion how surprising it is that people bring boxes of empty bottles to recycle and leave the empty boxes behind. Even more surprising than this we have recent-ly noticed a whole lot of lids from jars dropped at the bottle bank. It would ap-pear that people are bringing empty sauce bottles or coffee jars to recycle, taking of the lids before recycling the glass bottles, and dropping the lids for someone else to pick up. Please note.....it is all right to take these lids off at home and Put them in your own binWe are always pleased to see the picnic benches being used by locals and visitors for picnics, snacks, or just sitting down. Conveniently, there is a litter bin very nearby, as you can see in the photo:However the people who used the bench last week could not take their rubbish and walk twenty steps to drop it in the bin. This is how we found it on Saturday morning:A good example of idiots not hav-ing re-spect for them-selves or the environ-ment!Please continue to enjoy the benches, but do not leave a mess behind you!We hope to work on the flowerbed by the railway sidings on Saturday May 12th from 11am onwards. We could really use some help on this pro-ject so if you have half an hour to spare please join in. With your help we can re-store it to its former glory!Hope to see you then! §© May 2018 The Meath Coaster28 AistearSenior Infants in Ms. Fanning’s and Ms. Stapleton’s classes have been explor-ing different themes during their playtime every month this year. They focus on oral language, with the children learning lots of new words and vocabulary related to the theme. It starts with plenty of discus-sion about the theme, recalling any per-sonal experiences related to it, watching video clips or learning poems to enhance new vocabulary. This month we are talk-ing about “Water”. Our teachers read the story “Commotion in the Ocean” to intro-duce the names of many sea creatures. In our playtime during the school day, we play with our groups, and our activities change every day. Some of this month’s activities are making sea creatures out of play dough, splashing with starfish and crabs in the water tray or exploring the ca-pacity of different containers, construct-ing boats with lego or an octopus with straws, playing with the cruise ship pre-tending we’re on holidays, and role play-ing in the Aquarium, feeding the animals in the tanks, and putting on talks about whales or sting rays. We are having great fun learning and playing together!TennisWe have started tennis lessons as part of our Physical Education. David, from Laytown/ Bettystown tennis club, teaches us tennis skills every Thursday morning. We are practising lots of throwing and catching, bouncing and catching the ten-nis ball, on our own and with a partner. David makes sure we say the words to help us remember where our hands, bod-ies and feet should be. Soon we’ll use the tennis rackets to learn how to self- rally and hit the ball back to a partner, and then over the net. We are really looking for-ward to the next few weeks, developing our tennis knowledge and skills. §Please mention The Meath Coaster when replying to advertisements086/1733396086/3673406Mullenandsons1@gmail.comwww.Mullenandsons.comAlan Mullen & Sons Builders LtdFifth Generation Irish BuildersFor All Your Building NeedsNew Builds - Extensions - Renovations At-tic Conversions Fully Insured and RegisteredPrice Promise GUARANTEEtel. 087 091 7990 info@bestpol.iewww.bestpol.ie-10% local discount with this leafletAll types of blinds manufactured at our premises to your own specification.Your local supplierFor Building Materials & Garden ImprovementsMon - Fri 9am - 5pmSat 9am - 11amChurch Road, Mornington, Co.
