If you haven’t noticed the effects of this new comprehensive regulation you will no matter what area of life you op-erate in. In this article I will give a very brief overview, to familiarize yourself fully with the GDPR please visit the site of the Data Protection Commissioner at http://gdprandyou.ie/ The Dail made 105 amendments to the regulation before pass-ing it into law. You can download the full text of the act in pdf format by visiting www.oireachtas.ie/en/bills/bill/2018/10/ The Aims of The RegulationSome but NOT all of primary aims of the regulation are:#1 Make Companies, individuals, and or-ganizations responsible and accountable for keeping personal information on any citizen of the EU including justifying why such information is recorded, how long they will retain it, and crucially the right of every EU citizen to know what information is being kept and have it corrected and/or deleted. Specific portions of the regulation are targeted at protecting minors. #2 Provide for severe financial penalties for companies, organizations, and in-dividuals where they are found to be in breach of the regulation. #3 Elimination of complex or implied agreements to keep and pass on personal information.#4 Provide a simple mechanism for citi-zens to register a complaint against any company, individual, or organization that they believe is in breach of the act.#5 Require companies, individuals, or or-ganizations to respond to citizen requests about personal data. What Is Personal Data? The regulation defines personal data as any information which can identify an individ-ual or pertains personally to that individual and includes photographs and video. The Reach of The RegulationGDPR applies to any company, individu-al, or organization who records personal data on EU citizens regardless of where these entities are located inside the EU or in non EU countries. Thus a company lo-cated in the United States of America who holds personal data on EU citizens is sub-ject to the regulation. Next month based on your feedback I may continue on this subject. John D’Alton tells us: “The little harbour that then existed there (Laytown) was much used for surreptitious traffic, as a place where no customs or duties were exacted.”In 1821 the Nanny Water Station was housed in the Nanny Water Cottage. It was leased by the Irish Preventative Water Guard (IPWG), along with a number of other cottages for the boatmen and their families.the Master - five in all - had been washed overboard.” Mr. Prosser was awarded the R.N.L.I. Silver Medal for this rescue. On 1st.June 1871, after protracted disa-greements over rent and repairs, the Coastguard vacated the Nanny Water Cot-tage and moved across the river to Ken-nedys cottages in Laytown (now Alverno Terrace). In 1899, again after disagree-ments over rent and repairs, the Coast-guard moved back across the river, this time to a purpose built Coastguard Station and boathouse (pictured below). In 1822 the Preventative Water Guard, the Revenue Cruisers, and the Riding Offic-ers were formally united under a single authority: the Coastguard Service, and another station was added in Mornington beside the Maiden Tower.During it’s time in the Nanny Water Cot-tage the Coastguard were involved in many rescues, one of which is recounted here: “On the 31th.March 1831 during a heavy westerly gale, at 5 a.m., the Skerries smack ‘Wellington’ was reported sunk at Nanny Water, about two miles from the coastguard station. Only part of the top-mast with men clinging to it could be seen. Mr. Prosser, Chief Officer at Nanny Water Coastguard, launched his boat with five coastguards and rescued two men. The remainder of the smack’s crew, including In 1921, during the War of Independ-ence, coastguard buildings were declared “legitimate targets” and in June that year the ‘new’ Coastguard Station was burned to the ground, thus ending 100 years of Coastguard history in Laytown. In 1940 the burnt-out station was purchased and a private dwelling, “Shangrila”, constructed on the site. §Adult Education GuidanceAdult Education Guidance and Infor-mation Service of LMETB (Louth and Meath Education and Training Board). It’s hard to come up with something original, so while looking for inspiration last year for Mr. The Views birthday, I came across an ad for DNA testing. There are lots of companies doing this now and I was completely seduced by the idea that they could tell where you came from, and I persuaded him to get me one for my birthday as well. The test involves collecting saliva in a tube, which is easier than you’d think even if it is slightly gross. Off it goes and it takes a few weeks to come back. All I had to do was sit back and daydream about how exotic my ancestry was going to be. Well not very as it turns out – 70% Irish/Scottish/ northern European – so far, so boring and disappointing. Bit of a mix of Mediterranean with the final 15% be-ing Iberian. So Spanish or Portuguese. Can’t speak a word of either, but I prefer Portugal to Spain, so maybe it’s my spiritual home?! Iberian ancestry in Ireland would surely point to the lads from Spanish Armada. They reckon about 3,000 of the sailors ended up along the west coast from Kerry up to Donegal, and even though the theory is that they didn’t impact on the gene pool, my results seem to suggest otherwise. He turned a deaf ear to the gossip, while secretly suspecting that his wife had had a fling. He did nothing about it and raised all four boys with love and affec-tion. When his wife passed away, curios-ity took over and he had a few DNA tests done. The dark-haired son was his, it was the other three that weren’t!Mr. The Views results came back and were similar to mine – 70% northern European, but with a western Asian percentage. Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Cyprus, that sort of region. Not that surprising really given his fami-lies dark looks. He likes Turkish delight- and Belly -dancers.It’s all very fascinating, and the computer wizardry behind it all is pretty accurate too. My profile was straight away matched to a first cousin in America, and on to any second cousins, some 3rd and 4th too. To be honest, my birth-day card list is long enough with my immediate family, so I’m in no hurry to get in touch but its interesting stuff all the same. The thing we don’t know is how far back the Ibe-rian or west Asian influence comes in. There is, most likely in both families, a tale or two of Turkish barbers and Spanish sailors, but the family trees both say Dubs only for as far back as we go, but, as any-one who watches The Jeremy Kyle Show knows – the DNA doesn’t lie. §Please mention The Meath Coaster when replying to advertisementsHOUSEHOLD SERVICESBG PAINTING & DECORATINGInterIor & exterIor25 YEARS EXPERIENCE REFERENCES AVAILABLEFREE CONSULTATIONS & ESTIMATESWALLPAPER ALSO AVAILABLEContact Brian 086 7308449Call Nicky - 041 9887128 087 7734344 A Local BusinessCosmic Cleanwww.cosmicclean.ieT&Cs & Minimum Charge appliesMAJOR DISCOUNTS for Multiple RoomsRug Collection & Delivery Service AvailableProfessional Carpet & Upholstery CleaningSPECIAL OFFER!Noel SavageElectrical Services20 Years Experience • Security LightingFuseboard Upgrades • Rewires, Extra Sockets • Lights, Fully Insured and RegisteredNo Job Too SmallBettystown, Co. She stated she had a mortgage protection policy but wasn’t sure exactly what this covered. She remembered her partner (Peter) taking out an insurance policy which included some illness cover but didn’t remember exactly why they had the policy. They both had various pen-sions with different companies and em-ployers and she wanted to see if it would be worthwhile merging them.Cost:Mary hadn’t previously used a broker so was a bit apprehensive. “Before we go any further, what is the cost for you to re-view our policy’s?” I responded with “If you are happy for me to be your broker on these policies, there is no additional cost for you.” Mary: “But how do you get paid?” Me: “In many cases a broker’s fee is included in a policy whether you use a broker or not. You can request a fee-based charge which I can calculate based on work required but this will not reduce the cost of your existing plans.” In short, most people prefer to pay through fees paid di-rect from the pension/life providers.Information gathering:Mary asked me to investigate their poli-cies and I informed her that if both part-ners simply sign a document entrusting me as her broker, I could obtain all the in-formation required to review her policies. Mary asked if this would change her poli-cies in any way or cost her more money. I reassured her that this just allowed me to discuss her policies with the companies but that it did not authorise me to make any changes or give any instructions that would impact these plans. I emailed this one-page document to Mary and they both signed and returned it to me.Meeting:I met with Mary and Peter following my review and was able to outline the exact cover and pension savings they currently held, along with the pro’s/con’s to mak-ing changes or leaving in place. They in-formed me of their priorities and as their children were in their teens there wasn’t a necessity for as much life assurance, so they decided to direct more of their funds towards their pension.Peter had become a non-smoker, so a cheaper price or more cover for the same cost became available to him. Mary had the option to combine two pension plans, however she was better off moving it into a pension bond in her own name. If she had chosen to combine, she would have lost a tax-free lump sum option that was unavailable in her existing employers pension plan. Have questions or would like to chat about this topic? With the huge housing construction un-derway along the Meath coast, at least one new post primary school is definitely needed. For example Coláiste na hInse was de-signed as a 1,000 pupil school and has been at full capacity for several years. The location of the new school has not yet been determined. For some reason, the Department of Education refers to the entire Meath coast as “Laytown” but the school could be elsewhere, e.g. Duleek or Drogheda. The Department of Education & Skills is seeking parents' opinions on who should administer these new schools. They have launched a website at https://patronage.education.gov.ie/. If you live in the Meath coast area or Drogheda/Duleek, and you have a child who will be starting secondary school in the 5 year period from 2019-2022, then you are invited to go online and give you opinion about who should run (patronage) the new secondary school. The online patronage survey will run until the 31st July 2018. Both LMETB and Le Chéile have already expressed an interest in patronage and a secondary Gaelscoil would be another clear option. Maybe we'll get three schools! §© July 2018 The Meath Coaster38When Is It Time To Get Professional Help?Everyone experiences pe-riods of stress, sadness, grief and conflict, so when you’re feeling off it can be hard to know if it’s time to see a professional about the problem. And apparently, those who would benefit from some therapeutic inter-vention are not seeking it: While one in four adults suffer some form of mental illness, only about 46-65 per-cent with moderate-to-severe impairment are in treatment. Aside from suffering needlessly, those in distress actually make the problem worse by avoiding profes-sional help. There's still an unjustified stigma around mental illnesses, but we’re not even talking about mental illness we're talk-ing about life and how hard life can be. The benefits of psychotherapy [can be viewed] more like stress-relievers with strategies that make life easier and help remove stressors. So what are some signs it might be time to set up an appointment? It’s simply a question of measuring to what extent you can manage — anything that makes you feel overwhelmed or limits your ability to function requires therapy. When an un-foreseen challenge appears, it can be de-bilitating and paralyzing, lead to panic at-tacks and even cause you to avoid things Perhaps you've suffered a trauma and you can’t seem to stop thinking about itThe pain of a death in the fam-ily, a breakup or job loss can be enough to require a bit of coun-selling as things don't just go away. It can impair daily func-tioning and cause you to with-draw from friends. Maybe you have unexplained headaches, or immune issues, or other health issues. Research confirms that stress can manifest itself in the form of a wide range of physical ail-ments. If you’re disillusioned, feeling like there’s not a lot of purpose or a point or feeling a general sense of unhappiness, seeing a therapist could help you regain some clarity or start in a new direction. Perhaps you have lost interest in hobbies or friendships and are just not feeling in-terested anymore. This affects your work, your home life, your family and relation-ships. It builds up over time and genuinely gets worse as it will not go away. Perhaps it is stress, distress, depression or anxiety OR perhaps a combination of all. Talking things through with a professional Counsellor / Psychotherapist like myself is essential There is no stigma except the one you create in your own mind.
