< Previous© November 2020 The Meath Coaster 30 in so that we were able to finish the job quickly! James Ellis and David Conroy did a fan- tastic job restoring the ornamental boat flowerbed. It had deteriorated badly, the wooden edg- es were rotting and falling away. As you can see from the photos, new beams were put in place giving it a whole new look. It was later painted and “christened”! During October local residents, Pat and Johnjo Boyle from Alverno Heights took on the mammoth task of clearing the rub- bish and overgrowth from the area be- tween Alverno Heights and The Sidings. Their work has made an amazing differ- ence to a much neglected area, so well done!! Laytown Tidy Towns O ur team were busy during October clearing the paths and kerbs of the car park opposite Aldi. When we first looked at it the paths and kerbs were covered with weeds and bram- bles. Now that we have nine in the team it only took a few weeks to get it all cleared. The path from the car park up to the road was cleared during the week by Liz Barry and Marylou Murray. All in all a huge difference to that area! We also focussed on the kerbs and paths at the school. Liz and Joey started the clearance and the following week the rest of the team joined © November 2020 The Meath Coaster 31 Due to the return of lockdown we cur- rently do not have Will Connell, our CE participant working at the moment. As a result of this there is a lot more litter around the place, proving what a good job Will does when he is active! Should you feel like taking a stroll and possibly picking up some litter as you go, please let us know. We can supply bags, pickers, gloves and hi-viz jackets for you! We are always out on Saturday morning, meeting at The Coast Tavern at 10am. We look forward to seeing you! §© November 2020 The Meath Coaster 32 Drogheda Grammar School Horticulture Students supporting La na gCrann. "From a small acorn grows a mighty oak tree»." W ell done to our 4 Whitworth Horti- culture class for their efforts in fos- tering a tree culture and raising awareness of the importance of trees. They planted a tree as part of the Tetra Pak Tree Day 2020 which took place on Thursday, 1 st October. This year’s theme is Be A Force For Na- ture! (“Bí i do fórsa don nádúir!”) which focuses on the things we can do in our everyday lives to help nature and our envi- ronment. Students dug deep to ensure our small oak tree amongst the mature trees gets a good grounding along our campus entrance for years to come. 6 th year Geography Field Trip Our 6 th year Geography class recently completed their field work project along Ben Head in Gormanston beach. They spent the day out in the fresh air collecting samples and observing the unique nature of the shoreline. It was a very productive day to mark the start of their project. TY Forensics Workshop In mid-October, our TY students enjoyed a fantastic day questioning the famous conspiracy theories of our times. They thoroughly enjoyed the interactive nature © November 2020 The Meath Coaster 33 of this workshop run by Forensics Fun where they got to learn about different conspiracy theories and form their own opinion of them. It was a day full of lively discussion and thinking! Extra-curricular Activities It was very encouraging to see our extra- curricular activities get back up and run- ning at the end of September. Every day there is a great turn-out of students willing to play sports in all weather conditions or use their imagination for creative activi- ties. This year students can avail of new clubs and activities including HIIT classes, Lat- in studies and United Nations among oth- ers. We look forward to a great year of in house competition and fun! TY Walk Recently, our TY students enjoyed a brisk walk from Mornington to Laytown. It was a great opportunity for them to converse outside and enjoy the crisp fresh air! Grace, who has published two books on the subject - “Words The Sea Gave Us” and “How To Get Your Name In The Dictionary”, along with her long running blog, will be talking about newsworthy words, her word of the month, and any unusual words and phrases. The 14 th of October episode featured ma- cabre, eldritch, running amok (a rather gruesome history), feckless, doom-scroll- ing (apt these days), and the ship-wrecked local man who gave us the Beaufort Scale for weather. O ver this past number of weeks there have been a number of people park- ing in the little car park sectioned off on Bettystown Beach. My understand- ing, and its signposted as such, is that this space was created to help those who would find it difficult to park elsewhere in the village - the elderly and people who have a disability. However, there are many who seem to be using this area without considering an el- derly or disabled person may need it. My mother, since this little section was opened, drives onto the beach, goes for her daily walk, has a cup of tea while watching the waves, and heads home. Its her daily sanity and it has honestly meant the world to her during this pan- demic to be able to do this. Yesterday, she could not get a space and while others parked were having a ball, she had to drive back off the beach and negotiate the cracked footpaths and peo- ple in the village and walk back down to the beach. I would love if people could just be a lit- tle more considerate, and bare others in mind. If one can walk freely and easily to the beach from the street, please do, and leave the beach car park for those who find this much more difficult. With thanks for your time. § East Meath Hospice Association E MHA ,like all Charities had to cut back on fundraising in 2020.Sadly we couldn't have our usual Coffee Morn- ings in Whytes Limemkiln and Reddans , supported by Bewleys.Coffee Mornings are a very important fundraiser to help fund Driving Service and Comfort Fund However the great news is that we re- ceived two cheques recently One from Linda Donnelly Bellewstown who raised €3,067 and Laytown and Bettystown Golf Club who raised €6,000.
