Meath© March 2020 The Meath Coaster 42 Please mention The Meath Coaster when replying to advertisements The View From The Kitchen Table, By Geraldine Hughes M arch comes in like a Lion and goes out like a lamb, so the saying goes. I’ve stood at enough St. Patricks day pa- rades frozen, and soaked to the skin to know it’s true. It’s a sometimes bleak and stormy month. Hats off (maybe they should keep theirs on) to anyone who lives out the wesht of the country. Maybe it’s the very dramatic way the weather is reported on, but they appear to have developed a much wilder, harsher climate over the last decade than us here, smug and somewhat protected on the east coast. Out west, most of the year you are pretty much guaranteed to be blown off the planet and soaked through, which makes The Wild Atlantic way a genius piece of marketing. Since it does what it says on the tin, no one can complain that the weather wasn’t a balmy 22◦. Not that it bothers the na- tives. Not a jot if the usual storm coverage of Salthill in Galway is anything to go by, and in the midst of hor- rendous weather, you’ll see Paddy popping in for his daily swim before heading home for his dinner. I join in the usual chorus of condem- nation, but secretly I’m al- ways cheering him on. There is something heroic about the ordinary person who will not allow something as annoying as (extremely) stormy weath- er get in the way of what they love to do, and if this wild part of the country is where they have cho- sen to live, they are meeting its challenge head on with indomitable spirit, and that’s to be admired. Of course, they could also have a death wish, but either way I’d say the swim is exhilarating. I don’t even swim when I’m away and it’s 35 degrees, so you will never find me do- ing a sea swim in Ireland. That’s a prom- ise I won’t find hard to keep. It’s not that I can’t swim – I just can’t breathe at the same time so my time swimming is direct- ly related to how much air my lungs will hold – about a width of a swimming pool. This also makes me a very fast swimmer- blind panic does that to you. A desperate speedy dash from the security of one safe- ty bar to the other. So, whoever braves the wild Atlantic Ocean to surf or swim, has my complete admiration. Now and again I promise myself I’ll go back to adult swimming lessons and learn to swim properly so that I can do that leisurely, social, slow breast stroke up and down the pool while chat- ting. It hasn’t happened yet and that thin chilling wind that hangs around in March puts me off. I know I’d be indoors but there is nothing about the weather in March that would entice you (well me) to get into togs unless it was life or death(even then I’d hesitate) On the bright side though, days are longer, mornings are brighter and there is a whispery hope of a good summer to come. § Oasis Childcare Centre Mornington Co.
