< Previous© June 2020 The Meath Coaster 20 Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh Greetings from the Principal I welcome Minister Joe McHugh’s com- mitment to ensuring childrens’ education would not be held back and that he would move mountains to ensure no child is left behind. As a school community we are endeavouring to provide a vibrant and en- gaging virtual school online engaging the pupils and parents in a holistic education. As we approach the month of June, we re- mind ourselves of all the fun learning ac- tivities we would usually be engaged in, school tours, Sports Day, field trips to the beach and to the playground. However we are delighted to proudly undertake a Vir- tual Sports Day on Friday 12 th June 2020. We are combining a wellbeing week along with a Sports week and offering the pupils 3 daily activities, to choose one. From the 8 th of June the work schedule will reflect a wellbeing activity, an active activity and a visual arts one. Through- out this journey over the last number of weeks, we have prioritised the Wellbeing of the Staff and pupils. As a Staff and Board of Management we are are beginning to take some prelimi- nary steps towards preparing the school to transition back in September. We await further guidelines shortly. Meanwhile can I remind the Parents to kindly return the Education passports to the 6 th class teachers on Thursday the 4 th June. Website Our newly updated website is www.ssn- laytown.ie. Here you will find details of the book lists and uniform for September. I will be continually updating the Princi- pal’s blog also. We are hosting 4 virtual graduations for the 6 th class pupils and the pupils in our ASD class settings on Wednesday 17 th , Thursday 18 th and Friday 19 th June. Lots of surprises and fun activities for everyone. Though apart we are very much together, connected via Class dojo.Keep healthy and be safe. The initiative encourages schools to promote the im- portance of mental health and wellbeing among students and staff. From the 18 th to the 22 nd of May, Drogheda ETSS cel- ebrated Kindness Week, one of their many projects undertaken to obtain the Amber Flag. This month the School was awarded the flag for their excellence in promoting positive mental health in the school com- munity. This year, the school’s Wellbeing War- riors undertook several projects to make the school environment one of positivity, inclusion and wellbeing. These include a Christmas dress-up day, an internet safety week, and forming a Calm Collaboration space for students, which is an online space where students can contribute positive messages and ac- tivity suggestions during lock down. Earning the flag is a well-deserved vic- tory for the Wellbeing Warriors! DETSS Culture Day 2020: Drogheda ETSS holds the values of inclu- sion and diversity at its core. Despite not being physically in the school building to celebrate, the students and teachers came together online to share knowledge about the diversity of cultures represented in the school. © June 2020 The Meath Coaster 27 The students created projects about dif- ferent countries including; Japan, Greece, the United States and Ireland. Students took part in an online class and made live presentations of their work, which was enjoyed by students and staff alike. § Full constituency service remains in operation. We attempted to re- turn to work on Saturday 23 rd May, but the weather had other ideas.....between the strong winds and the rain it was impos- sible to do anything. Hopefully we will resume operations on Saturday 30 th ! Although most people did abide by the lockdown, sadly some people still in- sist on dumping their rubbish, expecting someone else to clean up after them. fore the lockdown was implemented. We are sad to report that someone dug them up and took them away. Is nothing sa- cred?? If anyone is that desperate to have some trees for their garden they could al- ways ask..... The week before lockdown Meath Co. Council were donating saplings to Tidy Towns groups. We got our fair share, but had to plant them in a garden until these strange times pass! We will be transplant- ing them in the next few weeks.......maybe our tree thief would like to ASK for a cou- ple more trees? But please do ask, don’t just help yourself! As always we would welcome new vol- unteers. We meet at the Coast Tavern at 10am every Saturday and work for about an hour. It's great that we are having such glorious weather during the easing of lockdown restrictions. Teenagers are once again able to meet up with friends in the sun- shine! However, if you have a teenager who plans to meet friends and possibly take a swim it might serve you well to note what they are taking with them. This week our CE participant went to clean up after a large group had left the Nanny estuary.......he picked up NINE bags full and at least half of these bags were full of towels, underwear, trousers etc. He even found a pair of Nike runners which looked almost new. We went to clean up the same spot on Sat- urday and found endless pairs of socks, two pairs of shorts and four more towels. All the clothes and towels are put in the recycle bin § This mess was left at the bottle banks on 7 th May. We are delighted to welcome back our C.E participant. He was really missed during the few weeks of lockdown and is making his presence felt now that he is back in ac- tion! Great job Will!
