It is also a time when people are in great difficulty and this means that the pressure on SVP to re- spond to their needs is much greater. SVP is a voluntary community organisa- tion which is financed by the community. The members in our conference assess families and individuals needs and pass on your support to them. It is with great urgency that we write to you during these challenging times as Christmas approaches. Financially 2020 has been a disaster for Star of the Sea, our monthly church collections stopped in March and all fundraising events by ourselves and others had to be cancelled. Thankfully a number of benefactors came to our aid and this helped us to continue with our work. The Christmas hampers which have been so welcome to more than 150 families cannot be organised this year but the good news is that they will be replaced by vouchers. St Vincent De Paul locally appeal to you to help us in these difficult times. A cash donation or food voucher of any value for any supermarket, Pennies or a butcher would be an excellent help. You may give your donation to any member of SVP lo- cally or contact any of the officers listed to arrange a donation or have a query an- swered. You can send us a message on svpstaroft- hesea2020@gmail.com People may also make a donation, howev- er small, to our online Christmas Appeal www.svp.ie/starofthesealaytownappeal “Let us put charity into practice this year and go out and assist those who are poor.” Thank you for your unstinting support and with your continued help we will cater for the need of people in our community with dignity and respect. MERRY from all at Meath Office meath@bohanhyland.ie Bettystown Town Centre, Bettystown, Co. Meath I t’s Christmas already and nearly the end of 2020! The Youth Club hasn’t been able to open due to Covid-19. Our Friday nights feel empty and we miss all our members. It’s been a difficult and strange time for everybody. We are wait- ing for things to go back to normal so we can welcome you all back to the Club. Hoping all our members and volun- teers have a very happy Christmas and a peaceful and healthy New Year!and Happy New Year! MERRY from all at Meath Office meath@bohanhyland.ie Bettystown Town Centre, Bettystown, Co. Meath© December 2020 The Meath Coaster 8 Work – Work – Work I think it’s fair to say, you can’t swing a cat in East Meath without bumping into some element of road or footpath works! I know that temporary traffic lights and construction works can be a bit of a pain at times, but they will be well worth in the end when we see the finished projects! Here’s a list of just some of the projects Meath County Council are delivering in East Meath: Laytown Car Park – a complete rede- sign and installation of drainage works, increased capacity for parking, disability parking spaces and the relocation of the Bring Banks to a new facility west of the bridge. These works are almost nearing completion! Ministown Road Junction on the Pil- town Road – New Safety Scheme now completed at this very dangerous location. Some of the Piltown Road now has road markings and I will continue to highlight the need for the entire road to be lined. Spine Road – Craddock’s are absolutely flying with the delivery of this new road. I have been out and about very early some mornings lately and have seen them start work before 6.30am. There will be some more temporary lights at the Triton roundabout when they begin the installa- tion of the new pedestrian crossings, and also at the Parochial Hall when they begin constructing the new roundabout and car park. I have secured some extra pedestri- an crossing with this project which I am delighted about, one at either end of the avenue between Scoil Oilibhéir Naoifa and Coláiste na hInse, and also one be- tween the Youthreach building and CNI. Woodgrange to Colpe Cross – a new footpath & cycle lane has be- gun, connecting this small estate to Colpe Cross, the bus stop, shops and nursing home. We also managed to secure enough funding for more public lighting along that stretch. I am work- ing on further improvements along this stretch of road and will continue to high- light them until we can secure their de- livery. New Pedestrian Crossings – I have been working on the provision of new pedes- trian crossings for a long time now and I am delighted that we are finally deliver- ing some of them at the moment. Harry’s Garage has always been a dangerous cor- ner and we have managed to secure two crossings, improvements to the footpaths and raised tables. This will slow down vehicles and make it safer for pedestrians to cross, it should also improve the access for wheelchair users in the area which I am particularly pleased about. We are also delivering a new pedestrian crossing in Donacarney on Church Road which will greatly improve the safety of pedestrians. LED Lighting and raised tables – as part of the July Jobs Stimulus Plan, we re- ceived funding from the NTA to improve safety at a number of our existing pedes- trian crossings. These will include some drainage works, provision of improved Council Update by Cllr Sharon Tolan Continued over....© December 2020 The Meath Coaster 9 Have a cracking Christmas!
