< Previous© October 2019 The Meath Coaster 30 Reált Na Mara BNS Ukelele Presentation T hanks to Donacarney Parents` Asso- ciation and very talented teachers, the creative arts are flourishing in Bunscoil Buachaillí Réalt na Mara! They continue to benefit from having been selected for the Arts` Council’s pilot of the Creative Arts Initiative. And the boys also have a long tradition of performing for their parents and the wider school com- munity in our concerts and shows. Now, this great work is set to flourish with the purchase of thirty four ukele- les by the fantastic Parents' Association! Donacarney Boys School are also fortu- nate to have some great musicians on their staff, and this year, Ms McWeeney and Ms Milne will teach ukelele to both fifth classes. Meanwhile, Mrs Quinn is pass- ing on her musical expertise to the boys in both Third Classes. She will teach tin whistle to both classes. Gaelic Football The boys from Donacarney school en- joyed two matches recently in Pilltown. The first one was against Dunboyne Sen- ior School and the last one was a local derby against Scoil Bradáin Feasa. The boys played their hearts out against the Dunboyne squad but were defeated. Luck was on their side against the local team however, and maybe the benefit of their early morning training sessions too, because they emerged victorious against the Gaelscoil. Our pictures show Ms McWeeney and Fifth Class boys being presented with ukeleles by the Chairperson of the Parents`Association Mrs Eimear Donnelly, accompanied by Treasurer Mrs Ruth Sherry and Secretary Gemma Carton. Lunchtime football sessions© October 2019 The Meath Coaster 31 Forty five boys attend the weekly training lunchtime, which are facilitated by teach- ers Mr Arthur, Mr Culligan, Mr Lynch, Mr Duffy and Mr Ryan. The school is very grateful to the squad of dedicated parents who support the boys at their matches and also in taking them to their early morning training. Here’s hoping all that dedication pays off! Roald Dahl Day The Second Classes in Donacarney Boys school, along with their teachers Ms Smith and Ms Callan, celebrated Roald Dahl day recently with a host of Oompa Loompas, Willy Wonkas, Charlies, Twits and Jameses! And indeed, the author him- self featured too! The boys also brought along their projects on Roald Dahl. It was evident from read- Donacarney Boys in Piltown with Mr Culligan and Mr Arthur© October 2019 The Meath Coaster 32 ing the projects that the boys really en- joyed learning and reading about Roald's life and work. Quentin Blake`s illustra- tions also inspired lovely portraits of the writer and his characters. Well done to all the Mams and Dads who had the unenviable task of finding or devising costumes for the boys! They showed a high degree of creativity and added to the magic and drama of the day! Donacarney Boys on the Run! Our giant footprint track is proving just as popular as ever after the summer break. The track marks a 500m track around our school and the boys make the most of it whenever they can, knowing that four laps marks one kilometre. Running is a simple way to build fitness and the benefits of running in schools are evidence based. Lá Spóirt Fabulous September sunshine greeted Lá Spóirt this year as students competed in a range of sports including sprints, relays, multi-sport, rounders, the high jump, welly throwing and the perennial favour- ite, the egg potato and spoon race. A huge thank you to St. Colmcille’s for allowing us the use of their facilities in Piltown and to the Roinn Corpoideachas for a hugely enjoyable day. Rang Brennan Receive Leaving Certifi- cate Applied Results for Fifth Year Rang Brennan received a breakdown of their results for Fifth Year and many in the class are on course for a “Distinction”, the highest grade in the course. The students have now completed one third of their Leaving Certificate. They have a busy term ahead as they must now complete three tasks and then prepare for interviews in January. Well done Rang Brennan! Idirbliain Trip to Carlingford All four Idirbliain classes completed a challenging ten kilometre hike around Carlingford on September 24 th . Under glo- rious sunshine the dáltaí and their caomh- nóiri passed the lime kiln and the famine village as they climbed Barnavave and en- joyed the spectacular views over Carling- ford Lough and the Mourne Mountains. Lady Gregory Productions Two plays are being produced under the Lady Gregory project in the school this year. Aoife Cronin’s original play “she.” was a huge success last year and she is following it up this year with “The Pup- petmaster”. Rehearsals have already be- gun and the show will be performed in November. “The Unmanageable Sisters” by Michael Tremblay is also at the re- hearsal stage. More TV means more political shows, documentaries, news pieces, and debate. I watched a current affairs programme recently and it was it was a spectacle. I have no idea what they were talking about because one was pon- tificating loudly while the other one was repeating ‘That’s not what I said. That’s not what I said’ over and over, the adult equivalent of sticking his fingers in his ears. On this occasion it was two men but the women are just as bad. The art of good debate seems to be lost and reduced to quick flashback answers, smart- assy soundbites, and point scoring. I have now turned into my Dad, shouting abuse at the TV and annoying Mr. The View. I’m not being all high-brow here, I’d just like to see some intelligent, well informed opinions, so I can listen to both sides and then sit com- fortably on the fence, which is what I usually do. It’s a modern phenomenon - the age of instant reply and po- larised opinion. Ask a ques- tion about a Vaccine? You’re instantly labelled an Anti- vaccer. Find Greta Thunberg a teeny bit irritating? Then you must be a climate change denier. Mention that some- one is from a different coun- try? then clearly you must be a racist! Go on regular rants about it all? Then you’re not only annoying – you’re nuts (though maybe that’s just in my house?). Oasis Childcare Centre Mornington Co. It’s wrong or its right. Its black or its white as the Katie Perry song goes. It’s such a pity that good debate has been silenced though because Irish people are, (yes, I am stereotyping) very voluble, with a rich and witty use of language. It’s a pity, even a crying shame, as my mother would’ve said, to see what pass- es for healthy discussion and agreeing to disagree. It’s all insults and brickbats now. I’m as guilty as anyone else of going down the rabbit hole that is the internet, and reading inane, insulting comments till I want to fling my phone under a bus! Between social media and the TV, you’d give yourself blood pressure problems! I’m sure people had strong differences in opinion hundreds of years ago, but by the time they got out the quill and parchment, considered their reply, sealed it and gave it to a Raven, or someone on horseback to deliver it, then waited for an answer, the mood was probably gone off them and they probably couldn’t re- member what it was they were so worked up over! A friend of mine loves watching political debates or current affairs pro- grammes, but she watches them while also follow- ing them on Twitter. Like I said, the Irish are a witty bunch and the twitter feed is a scream. I’m not sure which Mr. The View finds worse – me yelling at the TV or me falling about the place laughing while watching the TV and read- ing my phone at the same time, but at least it’s a bit of fun.. §BG PAINTING & DECORATING InterIor & exterIor 25 YEARS EXPERIENCE REFERENCES AVAILABLE FREE CONSULTATIONS & ESTIMATES WALLPAPER ALSO AVAILABLE Contact Brian 086 7308449 Call Nicky - 041 9887128 087 7734344 A Local Business C o s m ic C l e a n www.cosmicclean.ie T&Cs & Minimum Charge applies MAJOR DISCOUNTS for Multiple Rooms Rug Collection & Delivery Service Available Professional Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning SPECIAL OFFER!
