< Previous© July 2019 The Meath Coaster 30 Ireland’s Friendliest Place 2019 Slane Celebrates! S lane is celebrating its title as Ireland’s Friendliest Place 2019 with the launch of Slane’s Friendliest Place video. The video showcases all that Slane has to offer visitors, residents and shoppers! Slane is a perfect summer destination, as it is the go- to location to enjoy endless enthusiasm, exemplar service and an all round festi- val feeling in the village; as it exudes its friendliest place accolade loud and clear. Slane secured Ireland’s Friendliest Place Award at the National Retail Excellence Ireland Awards, which took place in No- vember, in the Great Southern Hotel in Kil- larney. This award is credited to the won- derful Slane retailers, the strong community spirit and proud residents within the village. Meath County Council and the Local Enter- prise Office Meath have been delighted to work with and support Slane retailers over recent months on this initiative. Five retailers in particular who have been flying the flag for Slane throughout this initiative, commencing in June 2018, are to be commended for their hard work, and commitment to the initiative and their never ending spirit to fly the flag high for Slane. Inside Out, The Muttonhead Butchery, Slane Craft Collective, Georges Patisserie and Slane Distillery were quiet- ly working in the background promoting Slane and ensuring the customer experi- ence for all was exemplar. The dedication of those involved has made it possible for Slane to demonstrate itself, as Ireland’s Friendliest Place 2019. At Slane’s celebratory event, Cathao- irleach Cllr Wayne Harding, Meath Coun- ty Council outlined, ‘We are extremely proud of Slane and all our retailers. It is a testament to the welcoming, wonderful, hard working ethos and spirit of the re- tailers, community and residents of Slane to win such a wonderful accolade as REI Ireland’s Friendliest Place Award 2019. Huge congratulations to Inside Out, The Muttonhead Butchery, Slane Craft Collec- tive, Georges Patisserie and Slane Distill- ery, Slane Tidy Towns and Slane Hub, it is a credit to you all.’ Bryan Rankin, Head of Public Affairs, Re- tail Excellence Ireland said, ‘Huge con- gratulations to Slane on picking up this prestigious award. We are delighted to recognise and award the very best in Irish retail, all of whom, have shown an unquestionable commit- ment to meeting and exceeding customer expectations, as well as innovation in Inside Out (Edel Healy and James Ausden), George’s Patisserie (George Heise)The Muttonhead Butchery (David Campbell), Slane Craft Collective (Lucy O Gorman representing); and Slane Distillery (Gary Byrne and Claire Cunningham) Slane Video: http://bit.ly/2XE5czG Make it Meath You Tube Channel© July 2019 The Meath Coaster 31 #Slane #MakeitMeath #ThisisRetail #MeathCountyCouncil #MeathLEO #REI #IrelandsFriendliestPlace www.makeitmeath.com ; www.meath. ie/business ; Social Media: @MakeitMeath @ MeathCountyCouncil @LocalEnter- priseOfficeMeath @RetailExcellen- ceIreland store and in-service delivery.’ Slane was in very strong competition, with Ennis, Carrick-on-Shannon, Limerick and Waterford all receiving Top 5 Finalist ac- creditation. REI noted the quality of en- tries received was extremely high and the five towns selected are standard bearers in driving customer excellence, hospitality and pride in their town. Slane had secured the highest results in the competition si nce its inception in 2016, so we truly are Ireland’s Friendliest Place! Minister Helen McEntee, Minister for European Affairs highlighted, ‘As a Slane resident, I am extremely proud of this wonderful village, our residents, and all our retailers. I had no doubt that Slane would do well in this competition but it is so heart-warming to hear that Slane se- cured such exceptional results with Retail Excellence Ireland’s mystery shopper au- dit, individual store assessments, includ- ing training, presentations and submis- sions to the REI judges. To top the bill, not only this year; but in all competitions since the inception of Ire- land’s Friendliest Place, is a credit to you all.’ At the celebratory event, produce from the 5 retailers who took part in the com- petition were showcased, the Ireland’s Friendliest Place plaque was unveiled, which will be displayed proudly outside the Slane Hub and the Slane video was launched, which was commissioned by REI and Meath County Council, to pro- mote Slane as Ireland’s Friendliest Place. This is a great achievement for all Slane retailers involved and a credit to the com- munities in the area! Navan had previ- ously won the Friendliest Place Award in 2016, with Trim short listed in the Top 5 finalists in 2017. Enfield and Athboy will take part in this year’s competition. The county is connected, working strongly to- gether to promote Meath as a wonderful place to live, work, visit, stay and most importantly shop in! §© July 2019 The Meath Coaster 32 Brexit Customs Workshop Open To All Meath Small Businesses C ustoms Training Workshops to help companies with importing and export- ing when the UK leaves the European Un- ion is being run by Local Enterprise Office Meath. The long awaited good weather has been great for people to enjoy the beach. Sadly it also brings out the usual crowd of teen- agers who gather in Laytown waiting for high tide when they jump off the bridge into the Nanny. This has to be extremely dangerous, and it would seem it's only a matter of time until a jump goes wrong for someone. Each day that these groups meet they leave behind a wealth of rubbish, includ- ing at times clothes and towels. This is what we found on Saturday 29 th June..... We counted, and recycled thirteen towels! Laytown Tidy Towns O ur raised beds at the roadside near Sonairte have really taken shape! We started this by applying some eco-friendly weed killer to the area. The frames were made using recycled wood. We used a mixture of Moss Peat and Pot- ting Compost in each bed, then planted some bulbs and seeds. We had a few plants to lend some colour to the beds. Then William Boshell of Pat's in Laytown do- nated a wealth of plants which led to the beds looking like this.... We are very grateful for this kind dona- tion! We scattered some bee bombs in the hedgerow behind the walkway which should give rise to pollinating wildflow- ers growing there next year. My school reports were characterised by comments about my day-dreaming habits and my mother used to despair at my over -active imagination (her words- not mine), and my continual what-ifs of every situation. I have to be honest here and say that my what ifs were usually of doomsday pro- portions. What if all the wheels came off the car while we were all in it? What if electricity went off and never came back on? What if a nuclear bomb went off? This last one is still relevant in fairness to me, but also it didn’t happen (yet). Also when I was young, the world was fairly obsessed with the continual carry on of the Americans and the Russians and our unfortunate global position that put us right between them. It seemed to me to be a legitimate worry although I obviously gave it far more attention than it merited. In today’s terms I would be diagnosed as having Anxiety albeit on a low level, and not debilitating, but then it only merited some eye rolling and irritation. By and large, nothing has really changed for me. I lose sleep over the most mundane things, most recently over a borrowed cake tin I brought to a party. I fretted all the way there about how I was going to Oasis Childcare Centre Mornington Co. East Meath’s Leading Childcare Provider since 2005 get the tin back without hovering over the host and spent the evening mentally hop- ping from one foot to the other like a hen on hot griddle until the cake was cut, and I retrieved it. While it didn’t completely de- stroy my evening it didn’t add to it either. I have scrunched up my Aldi shopping bags going in to Tesco because I’m con- cerned that using a rival supermarkets shopping bags is some kind of social ta- boo. I have spent way too much time thinking about trying to create a ‘Tone of voice’ button for texts, least I spark a war of words with an off-colour remark or an ill-judged comment. I have re-run conver- sations in my head worrying that I might have offended someone. Chatting about this with friends, it would seem I’m not alone. Or maybe I only know anxious people? Or maybe they just agreed with me because they didn’t want me to feel odd? Maybe I am a little odd... Maybe they feel sorry for me.?!! Maybe my brain just has a low boredom threshold? It certainly doesn’t like to relax much, that’s for sure which means I’m a pretty bad sleeper. I got a Fitbit so I could track my sleep pattern, which is so bad-according to the data- that its detrimental to my health, which upset me so much that I couldn’t sleep at all, and now the Fitbit is banned except for daytime use...but that doesn’t stop me worrying about it! §BG PAINTING & DECORATING InterIor & exterIor 25 YEARS EXPERIENCE REFERENCES AVAILABLE FREE CONSULTATIONS & ESTIMATES WALLPAPER ALSO AVAILABLE Contact Brian 086 7308449 Call Nicky - 041 9887128 087 7734344 A Local Business C o s m ic C l e a n www.cosmicclean.ie T&Cs & Minimum Charge applies MAJOR DISCOUNTS for Multiple Rooms Rug Collection & Delivery Service Available Professional Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning SPECIAL OFFER!
