Drogheda Credit Un-ion recently ran their annual Art Competi-tion, where schools from Drogheda, Trim, Bettystown & Dunleer sent in hundreds of entries along with a selection of piec-es from the over 18 year category. Stamullen Author Launches BookStamullen author and long-running Meath Coaster columnist, Grace Tierney, launched a nonfiction book this month. After a decade of exploring unu-sual English words in her award-winning Wordfoolery blog (www.wordfoolery.wordpress.com), she decided to cel-ebrate the intriguing life stories of the ex-traordinary people who gave their names as eponyms to the English language.Any word named after a person is an eponym. The one every Irish schoolchild learns is boycott, but did you know about trilby, casanova, jumbo, blurb, maverick, or hooligan?“How To Get Your Name In The Diction-ary” (the lives behind eponyms) features more than 260 eponyms across subjects as diverse as food, Irish eponyms, calendars, hats, inventions, words named after plac-es, Greek gods, military history, politics, astronomy, fashion, popular phrases, vil-lains, science, and a selection of eponyms which simply defy categorisation. It’s an ideal read for word geeks, history lovers, and bi-ography buffs.Available now as paperback on Ama-zon, or ebook on Kindle, Kobo, or Ap-ple Books. © November 2018 The Meath Coaster13© November 2018 The Meath Coaster14The Stamullen Roundup By Grace TierneySt. Mary’s Baton Twirlers are running a table quiz night on Friday the 9th of November at 8.30p.m.. No longer a private fee paying boarding school, we exclusively became a Co-edu-cational day school in 2014. Ours is a rich tapestry of history over the decades. Starting with a group of enthusi-astic young men, fondly remembered as “The Forty Thieves” during the 1950’s to a school operating within the state sys-tem and catering for 450 young men and women who continue to receive an edu-cation that is both holistic, student cen-tred and strives to create accountable and principled students in the Ireland of today. Education in its broadest context matters and the achievement of our students is as relevant today as it was over 60 years ago. That is testament to the thousands of stu-dents educated in Gormanston (including the principal). While the make-up of our school build-ing looks different, our ethos and values remain the same. We will expand, and we will grow and 60 years from now we are confident Gormanston College will con-tinue to offer a valuable and sustainable education to tomorrow’s young people.Macbeth TripOur Sixth-year students recently visited the Smock Alley Theatre to see Macbeth!RugbyCongratulations to the Senior and Junior rugby teams, who started off the season in style with two comprehensive wins over St. Paul’s Secondary School, Raheny.
