< PreviousJanuary 2018 The Meath Coaster30The Stamullen Roundup By Grace TierneyHappy New Year!A hearty thank you goes to Kathleen Gough for organising the annual Young at Heart Christmas party – it was, as usual, a great night out for the older members of our village community. The Parish Fund Raising committee would like to extend their thanks to all who helped with the December Bingo Night at the City North Hotel.Well done to Gerry Moore who won the Cycle Club’s annual Poker Classic.A date for your diary - the AGM of St. Patrick’s GAA Club will take place on Monday the 22nd of January. If you want to get the New Year off to a healthy/eco start, pay a visit to Elmgrove Farm, Gormanston. Well-known locally as daffodil producers, they’ve recently opened a farm shop. Not too many air-miles on your fruit and veg if you’re shop-ping there. The recent meeting about the proposed playground for our village was well-at-tended. Two options are now being ex-plored. The council is seeking “Expres-sions of Interest” for land in the locality and the local area development plan is being altered to include a playground in the new housing development. More de-tails are available at “Stamullen Needs A Playground” on facebook.Hope for the Homeless are back in the Community Fund tokens at Tesco in Balbriggan. Don’t forget to use your shopping “vote” to help them raise funds.Congratulations to local author Brona Mills on her debut time-travel romance novel “A Time for Everything” which is available now in e-book and paperback format on Amazon and in Easons etc. She spent her December at book-signings, be-ing interviewed on local radio, and rack-ing up five star reviews.Congratulations also to our local Social Democrats representative, Sarah Vanden Broeck who was recently awarded her Irish citizenship. With wintry weather about, don’t forget the three salt and grit boxes around the village installed by the Community Alert group. They are available for use where needed.Got Stamullen news? A ship would line-up to safely enter the narrow channel when the view of the Lady’s Finger was obscured behind the tower. This method became redundant when the river walls were built in 1765. It also served as a look-out post during the Elizabethan Wars with Spain (1585-1603) to warn of any approaching enemy ships. The battlement parapet was added in the 19th century.Standing on oak piles (now covered with sand) approx 18.2m high and 3.6m sq at its base, when the Maiden Tower was built is not clear. It was already in exist-ence by 1582 when it was proposed to build a tower at Ringsend, in Dublin, of “such height and strength as shalbe of a perpetual continuance like the tower at Drogheda.” Many historians believe it was built dur-ing the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603), the Virgin Queen, hence the name ‘Maiden Tower’. The original name how-ever was “Mayden Tower”, named after the surrounding area known as Mayden-hayes at the time. It may well be that it pre-dates the Elizabethan era and that the name ‘Maiden Tower’ is pure conjecture.Issac Butler visited the tower in 1744 and took an accurate account of it, which re-mains substan-tially the same today. “The bat-tlement parapet is 19th century, the fabric of the tower built with the typical Irish masonry tech-nique of tapering the stair to a fine rising point in-stead of a newel, may well have been constructed several centuries earlier.” Folklore has it that a young maiden built the tower to keep watch for the return of her betrothed, who had been summoned overseas to war on the eve of their wed-ding. On parting he said “When I return, if I’m alive, I will hoist a milk-white ban-ner, if not, a red flag will float from the mast-head.” Daily she watched for his ship from the tower till one day it appeared on the hori-zon. On seeing the tower - which had been built during his absence, and mistaking it for the watch-tower of an enemy invader - he immediately hoisted the red flag of war. As it drew nearer, the maiden saw the red flag and taking this as a sign that her betrothed was dead, overcome with grief she fell from the tower to her death. Her heartbroken fiancé is said to have con-structed the obelisk known as ‘The Lady’s Finger’ in her memory, representing the tragic young maiden’s finger bereft of her hoped-for wedding ring. §Photo by Dick WalshWednesday 24th January 7pm – 9pmOnline Enrolment Available NowContact: Director of Adult Education Email: adulteducationcni@lmetb.ielmetb.ieLAYTOWN/BETTYSTOWNNight ClassesSPRING 2018www.meathnightclasses.ieor Contact Coláiste na hInse www.colaistenahinse.ie (and follow the links)Email: adulteducationcni@lmetb.ie orENROLMENT AND CLASS VENUE Coláiste na hInse, Laytown-Bettystown, Co. January might be gloomy, long and more than a bit boring but it is a good month for intentions. My middle name should be ‘Best of intentions’. The plans I make that never come to fruition! The fantastic imaginative and spot on amazing birthday presents I intend to buy that end up as 20 quid in a birthday card. The well thought out meals that become takeaways. The holidays with something for everyone that end up as one that has little for anyone – I am queen of them all. I think a lot, and I think in pictures (does everyone? I dun-no...!) but pretty pictures don’t make the plan work so 2018 is the year that it will all change! Positivity- lets be having’ ya!I found just the thing to help me achieve my aims – not a calendar – a family or-ganiser. Oh yeah! It’s got pockets, two of them – one for Bits and Bobs, and one for Odds and Ends. Realisti-cally I’ve no idea what I’m meant to do with either of them but they make it look like it knows what it’s do-ing. It has two notebooks - one with lines and one without, and its own spring-loaded pen. This organiser means busi-ness, and so do I. It’s an evening’s work entering in all the family birthdays, which strangely, I can re-member. Every single one of them. I just never re-member them on time. So that’s birthdays and anni-versaries all entered. Then Oasis Childcare Centre Mornington Co. Meath Crèche Montessori Playgroup After School Telephone 9888135 + Purpose Built + Fully Insured + HSE Inspected + Fire Certified + Intercom Entry + Large Safety Tiled Playground + Large Car Park + Easy Drop Off & Collection + Small Groups + Dedicated Staff A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR CHILDREN & THEIR PARENTS Since 2005 our loyal repeat customers & 100% occupancy tells you that we deliver the highest quality, affordable childcare in the East Meath area Enrol with us and make sure your precious child gets the best!! East Meath’s Leading Childcare Provider we turn to the monthly stuff. By the time I’m finished January, I am already running out of space. Work and school schedules elbow each other out of the way, while I try to squeeze in any stray Doctor/dental/hospital appointments, re-minders for bills to be paid, and anything out of the ordinary that might need to or-ganised. I mean the organiser is the place to put it all. Right?! But it doesn’t all fit and the problem is that it has little square boxes, and no-one’s life fits into little square boxes. The ideal organiser would have pliable plastic bubbles that could expand at will when needed, flow on the next activity, squeeze each other out and intrude on each other in some cases erasing the other scheduled task completely. The ideal one spontaneously erase all the non-essential stuff and simply schedule in ‘Down time’, or ‘Sit on the sofa with a vacant expres-sion for 15 minutes time’ (I might know some people with this one already) or ‘sit and chat with the kids/each other’ time. We all know that they are the things that should take the most space on any of our schedules, but never do. So now I find myself invent-ing the Disorganised Family Organiser. It comes with the aforementioned expandable bubbles, very large pages, and it’s called the Disorgan-ised Best of Intentions Year planner (It’s a mouthful). It also comes with a large pin to burst all those bubbles so you go spend time doing the stuff that matters most. . . §HOUSEHOLD SERVICESBG PAINTING & DECORATINGInterIor & exterIor25 YEARS EXPERIENCE REFERENCES AVAILABLEFREE CONSULTATIONS & ESTIMATESWALLPAPER ALSO AVAILABLEContact Brian 086 7308449Call Nicky - 041 9887128 087 7734344 A Local BusinessCosmic Cleanwww.cosmicclean.ieT&Cs & Minimum Charge appliesMAJOR DISCOUNTS for Multiple RoomsRug Collection & Delivery Service AvailableProfessional Carpet & Upholstery CleaningSPECIAL OFFER!Noel SavageElectrical Services20 Years Experience • Security LightingFuseboard Upgrades • Rewires, Extra Sockets • Lights, Fully Insured and RegisteredNo Job Too SmallBettystown, Co. When deciding if you need Life Assurance the kind of questions you should consider:• How will my family adjust financially if my partner or I die?• Will my mortgage be paid off?• Will my loans be paid off?• Which lifestyle will I be able to maintain?• Have I appropriate provisions in place long term?• Would I be able to afford to not work for a period of time?In most cases, Life Assurance has a set amount of Life cover and a set time pe-riod. The average Life Assurance policy is cancelled within 8 years which means that many people will be taking out a new policy and will not receive any benefits from their current plan. There is generally no value on these policies unless you are making a claim.A Life Assurance company has recently introduced a Whole of Life cover that of-fers you several options once you have passed 16 years. Once you have paid into it for this term, every year thereafter you will have an option to continue paying, encash the policy (receiving 70% of your premiums back) or stop paying for the cover and you will maintain a specified amount of Life cover forever. Here is an example for a person who is 45 years of age, a non smoker who takes out €100,000 Whole of Life cover. The cost of this would be €111.66 per month (half the cover would cost roughly half the price). Let’s imagine they are retiring at 65 years of age, so they have paid into this plan for 20 years at that stage but they want to know what options they have at that time:1. Change Nothing: They can continue paying this policy. The premium will always be €111.66 and the Life cover will remain at €100,000 while they continue payments.2. Guaranteed Life Cover €35,023: They can cease paying the €111.66 per month premium. They would be told at that time that they will have €35,023 Guaranteed Life assurance for the remainder of their life.3. Guaranteed Cashback €17,644: They can cease paying the €111.66 per month premium. They would be en-titled to encash the policy for a guar-anteed €17,644. There would be no further cover from this policy.Unlike some of the older whole of life “with savings/encashment” benefits, these are not investment policies. The figures are guaranteed and you can see the dif-ferent options available from year 16 on-wards (every year you pay beyond year 16 increases the offer available). If the policy is cancelled before 16 years, then the above options are not available. §oran@drumgoolebrokerage.iewww.drumgoolebrokerage.ie kumon.ieDrogheda North Maths and English Study Centre041 9832547droghedanorth@kumoncentre.ieFees vary. We were very thankful to all the people who attended. Two groups of people trav-elled a long journey just to support us on the night. Many thanks. I would like to thank Thomas Byrne T.D., (photo above) he is always there for the people. Thanks to Gardai Shane Dervan, Matt McKenna and Barbara Kelly who made time to call in. They enjoyed meeting and talking to people very much. There was chat with neighbours before the meal, talking about ‘olden’ times. The meal was to a very high standard as usual. Matt Leavey provided the music and the floor was full all night. They all had a ball. Then two singers too to the stage, Paul Redmond and daughter. They provided a different kind of music. They were excel-lent. The only problem was there was not enough time for more! Then the big man himself arrived. He was a little late dur to the very frosty condi-tions. He was in a very good humour, sang and danced with the people. Well done Santa! I hope the priests of the parish, Fr. Kelly and Fr. Smyth enjoyed the night. Brendan Battersby is beyond words, he makes our night and his friendly staff were excel-lent with people of the parish and beyond. Thanks for your support down through the years, without you it could not happen. Thanks also to Brendan Matthews, neigh-bour and friend, always there for us, also the Drogheda Independent. Thank you, Kathleen. Happy New Year. §Betty Matan, Kathleen Gough, Julie Casey, Nuala Kavanagh, Peter Kavanagh, Sean McCannnShane Dervan, Thomas Byrne T.D.
