Dublin.January 2018 The Meath Coaster6Bettystown Tidy Towns GroupIt was wonderful to see Bettystown’s first Christmas Tree lights shine in the night sky on Saturday December 9th . An estimated crowd of in excess of 400 peo-ple attended the event. The carol singing, performed by pupils from Scoil an Spio-raid Naoimh, was fantastic and added a real festive spirit to the evening. Santa also made an appearance on the night and was very happy with all the local children. The town has been enhanced by the new plants and flowers in the planters that were planted by Carroll Estates, develop-ers of Cois Na Mara, who have partnered with Bettystown Tidy Towns to support some of our initiatives. We look forward to working with them in 2018.Many thanks to all our sponsors, Anagenic hair design, Ashcroft Property Develop-ment Ltd, developer of Eastham Square, Carroll Estates Dublin Ltd. , developer of Cois Na Mara, Councillors Eimear Fergu-son & Sharon Tolan, Funtasia, Pat’s Cen-tra, Reddans Hotel and Bar, Stacks Phar-macy, Urban Life Developments Ltd., de-veloper of Dun EimearAfter discussions with representatives of the owner of the derelict site, located be-hind the statue of the Boy with the Kite, they agreed to have it cleared and this work is now complete and we will con-tinue our discussions to see how we may enhance this site. In relation to other local derelict sites, we will continue to make every effort to contact the owners, asking to have them cleared or raising the issue to Meath County Council to address under their Derelict Site bye-law. The derelict sites are not only an eye sore on the area but are becoming illegal dumping grounds and home to vermin. The Bettystown Tidy Towns group are al-ways looking for volunteers and sugges-tions. With Christmas behind us, it’s now time to start making new plans for the year ahead. As a club we are very fortunate to have finished 2017 on a real high. In October of last year we applied to take part in a process which provided equipment grants to Youth Groups. Since our inception we have generally re-lied on the generosity of the good folk in East Meath providing us with games ta-bles and the likes to help our Youth Club be as successful as it is today and with that we would like to sincerely thank you all for your kind donations. Over the years we have managed to main-tain these items to ensure maximum good use but dare I say it, time has taken its toll on various items. So back in September 2017 the Minis-ter for Children Dr. Catherine Zappone encouraged Youth Groups to apply for a share of a €6 million equipment fund be-ing made available across the country and said the new equipment fund was being introduced in recognition of the “signifi-cant development work undertaken by local volunteer youth groups”. She recog-nised that youth clubs and various other youth groups working on the ground in communities are absolutely vital. It was stated that “we improve health and well-being amongst the members that engage with our services, reduce/stop anti-social behaviour and generally help prevent young people from getting into trouble”. It was accepted that the work carried out by volunteers needs and deserves Gov-ernment Support As part of the application process we con-sulted with our young members to seek their views on what new equipment they would like us to apply for on their behalf, to have in their club and how they felt it could benefit them. And after all the hard work of making our application, pricing the items and get-ting the relevant quotes, we received an invitation to attend a presentation evening from the LMETB (Louth Meath Educa-tion Training Board) to attend D.I.F.E. (Drogheda Institute of Further Education) College with 106 other invited local vol-unteer led clubs for an awards night. They included Scouts, Guides, Youth Café’s, Brass Bands, Accordion Bands etc. Our esteemed Cllr Sharon Tolan, the Vice Chair of the LMETB board had the honour of presenting the awards for the evening’s event. Sharon was especially pleased to present us with our award of a whopping €4000, yes €4000, as she her-self was part of the driving force behind helping us to set up BDLM Youth Club as far back as 2014 and was adamant that East Meath would have a Youth Club in the locality by 2015 and 3 years on, hey we’re still here. Now when large sums of money are be-ing handed out, there are rules, and rightly so. Rule 1 – Spend it by a given deadline and spend it quickly. Rule 2 – Spend it on what it was sought for, (Not Jolly’s) January 2018 The Meath Coaster9Rule 3 – Receipts to be retained as proof of what was purchased and Rule 4 – Any unspent monies goes directly back to the funder. Now that’s fair and we can assure you that our money will be spent by the time you’ve read this article. Hopefully we will have pictures of the equipment we purchased to show you in next month’s edition. The good news continues. In November, TESCO Bettystown awarded us over €300 as part of their Bi-Monthly Commu-nity Fund in store appeal which involves placing Blue Tokens in tubes which relate to supporting 3 good local community causes every 8 weeks. That money will go straight into the club solely for the benefit of the young people who attend our Youth Club to be decided by the young people. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and management and espe-cially TESCO’S customers for supporting us over the weeks of the blue token event, we really do appreciate it.Now, as with all Christmas’s there’s al-ways presents that were either given or accepted over the festivities and the polite response was (ah you shouldn’t have) or (ah sure there was no need, really) when you really wanted to say was (it’s really not me – now who can I pass that on to!!) well fear not, if Vinny’s are not on your ra-dar send it down to the club anonymously (we won’t tell anyone) and let’s see if we can do something fun with it. “It’s amaz-ing what our arts & crafts department can do with a pair of socks.”Now be warned we’re not accepting Puppies or the likes, well not unless they’ve been stuffed al-ready (not like real ones). I’m sure you get the idea. We are very fortunate to have the space in the Coláiste to run our Youth Club and on that note we would like to thank the Man-agement and Staff of Coláiste na hInse for facilitating us in using this hall to run this club in such a successful manner. Also due to the popularity and success of the club and with large numbers attend-ing each week we definetly need more volunteers to ensure the continued suc-cess of our club. No previous experience required. Call in and see us on any Friday night, between 8.00 p.m. and 10.00 p.m. when we’re open, even if it’s just to get a flavour of what we do. All volunteers will be Garda vetted and be put forward to complete a Child Protection course in or-der to work with the young people in our club. It is very rewarding. We would also like to see more Youth Leaders participating in our club to join the existing Youth Leaders who attend to help out each week. So come on down! If you feel you’re too old to be a member, you’re probably the right age to become a Youth Leader. You will receive all the relevant training in leadership skills nec-essary. § Next >
