< PreviousMarch 2017 The Meath Coaster ©20News from JulianstownFebruary went out with a bang as Storm Doris did her utmost to knock over as many trees as she could throughout the country. She certainly didn’t forget Julianstown where she reigned her terror at Whitecross Woods toppling four giant 25m (80 ft) trees and then down the Bal-lygarth Road to knock a few more! Spring is now well and truly on the way with our Daffodils popping up all around the vil-lage. Have you noticed our new Daffo-dil planting on the Laytown Road and the wonderful little Tete a Tete coming down the hill?Tidy Towns This is the time of the year when Meath County Council Anti Litter Initiative begins. We have entered several of the housing estates and the village itself into this competition and we hope that all the residents of Julianstown will once again make every effort to keep the village looking clean. I know it is difficult with passing traffic and fly dumping, but you have to agree the village looks so much nicer when it is litter free. National Spring CleanThe An Taisce National Spring Clean will take place in Julianstown on Saturday 8th April and Meath Co. Co. is supplying a skip, which will be left outside White-cross N.S. This is an ideal opportunity to clean up all the back roads and black bags, litter pickers and gloves will be provided. Julianstown Residents are really sup-portive of this event and we hope to see you and your neighbours at 10 am at the school! There will be someone going around the village picking up the bags, so you don’t have to worry about hauling them with you. Tea/Coffee and light refreshments served. For further information please contact Niamh on 086 3477283.Community Grant SchemeThe Community Grant Scheme 2017 is now open and Applications are invited from Community Groups, Tidy Towns / Village Committees, Residents Asso-ciations and other organisations, to assist with actions and projects being undertak-en in their local area. This will see this vital piece of in-frastructure progress to the Com-pulsory Purchase Order phase. Director of Services for Transport, Des Foley has assured me that this project is a priority for his team, and that construc-tion should begin in 2018, however, I will continue to push for construction to begin as early as possible following completion of the CPO process.€140,000 has been allocated for the Laytown Park and Ride Project. Transpor-tation will present the options for this pro-ject to Councillors at the April Municipal District Meeting. Again, improvements for sustainable transport measures and an overall effort to improve the parking situ-ation in Laytown needs to be addressed.€50,000 was allocated to complete a foot-news for those with children attend-ing the Franciscan College, who are currently walking quite a dangerous road to and from the bus stop.Consultants, DBFL, have now been appointed to prepare the Part 8 Planning for the Boyneside Trail for the route from Drogheda out to Mornington. This is a very positive step forward for this project!Overall, our Road Grant Allocation from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport has seen an increase this year of over €1.2 million for the county. In correspondence, we received a disap-pointing response in relation to my call for a new Garda Station in Laytown. The Minister for Justice outlined the “Garda Capital Investment Programme 2016-2021 does not include plans to construct a new station in Laytown or refurbish the existing one.” I will continue to raise this issue at a na-tional level, and have asked the council to respond to the Minister outlining the growing population and housing develop-ments under construction in the area. Municipal District Meeting - 16th Febpath from the bus stop at Gormanston down to the college. This will be welcome March 2017 The Meath Coaster ©23This month’s MD meeting was a full and lively one, with many of the council ex-ecutive attending to present the 2017 Schedule of Municipal District Works. Works will begin soon on improving the bus stop outside Reddan’s, as this contin-ues to cause traffic issues. Some major road improvements are scheduled for the R150 in Donacarney, and I have requested that the council look at ways of funding the completion of a footpath in conjunc-tion with these works. We have many chil-dren attending the schools here, and the community in Donacarney are completely cut off from nearby shops and amenities in Bettystown. The executive are looking at Development Levies in relation to this and I will keep you updated. Other ar-eas of concern that I outlined are, lighting needed at the main road junction at the top of the Piltown Road, road markings for the entire Piltown Road, new junction lay-out at Harry’s garage in Mornington (post Irish Water works planned for 2017), new road markings at Bettystown Cross, foot-path repairs in our older housing estates such as Beach Park etc, traffic calming measures on the Coast Road in Laytown, the completion of the footpath from the Educational Campus to Bettystown. Just some of a long list of issues I am working on!Julianstown continues to be a priority, with 22,000 vehicles travelling through the village every day! Following my meeting with the Director of Services, a meeting was held with the Department of Transport in relation to possible short term measures and the ultimate long term solution. I have requested that the council seek a toll holiday at the Duleek exit for the M1 motorway, to assess if this would make a difference to the amount of com-muters using the Julianstown route to avoid the toll. I have also requested im-mediate traffic calming measures to be put in place, and a feasibility of a bye pass for the village. I will keep you updated on progress.Aldi Update9 appeals were made to An Bord Pleanála and a decision is due by 16th May.Other NewsFollowing my meeting with Whitecross Primary School, myself and Government Chief Whip Regina Doherty met with Minister for Education, Richard Bruton to outline our concerns and to stress the im-portance of the speedy delivery of a new school for Julianstown. We had a very positive response, and I will continue to work on this issue until the school is de-livered!A Beach Management Committee was officially formed in February, and I look forward to working with everyone to im-prove the beach experience for both locals and visitors alike! Please get in touch if you have an issue, Sharon §March 2017 The Meath Coaster ©24Scoil Oilibhéir NaofaThe 10 @ 10At 10am on Fri. 10th Feb the whole school took part in the Operation Transformation 10 @ 10 initiative. We began our research by examining the place names shown on nearby road signs and learned that Mornington was originally known as Baile Uí Mhornáin which stems from “Town of the Mariner”. The first stop on our field trip was Mornington Beach where we heard about the legends involving The Maiden Tower and The Lady’s Finger. We then conducted a survey of plants and wildlife that could be found on the beach. Our next stop was to visit the Boyne Estuary where we used binoculars to spot the waders that flock to this conservation area. When we arrived back, we created large maps on which we plotted local areas of interest. 10@10On Friday 10th February, all the girls of Donacarney GNS completed Operation Transformation’s 10@10. The 10@10 consisted of 10 minutes of various exercises to be completed at 10am. These short bursts of exercise are designed to get everyone moving and their heart rates ris-ing. The whole school took part enthusi-astically and great fun was had by all. §Call us on 041 9886545 for an appointment.Email: bettystowndental@gmail.comWeb: www.bettystowndental.ieTriton Road, Bettystown, Co.
